As part of TIME Firsts, our project featuring 45 groundbreaking women, TIME and LIFE want to hear stories from our readers. Has a woman or girl you know been a “first”? The first to win the science fair? The first in her family to attend college? The first to become mayor of her town? Share your images and stories with us using the hashtag #SheIsTheFirst, and they could be featured in @TIME. Read more at TIME.com/Firsts … We look back at the historical figures who shattered glass ceilings. Geraldine Ferraro became the first female vice presidential candidate to represent a major American political party in 1984. Check out our Instagram story for more historical firsts. Hey buds! Today, we celebrate Women's Equality Day in the US. Here's a little history lesson on the first female Vice Presidential candidate. Joe Biden had promised to pick a female running mate, and has finally chosen Kamala Harris. Before Kamala Harris and Sarah Palin, there was Geraldine Ferraro. She paved the way for more women to get involved in politics and to run for office. #geraldineferraro #vp #vicepresident #democrats #kamalaharris #joebiden #bidenharris2020 #nastywomen #womensequalityday (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEWuMc4FYiV/?igshid=1bi10y87i4qhi
Vote Her In, Part 3
Sometimes you look at a photo from over 30 years ago and you know exactly what you were doing and remember what that day or even moment felt like. Other times you come across an old photo and are puzzled. Sometimes you can't even remember the other people in the picture with you. But most often I find myself somewhere in between. I can tell it's the fall, probably of 1984, because I am wearing my Paris sweatshirt and just the way Phil looked that year, his senior year of high school. My mom is probably acutely aware that in a year he will be off to college and in this brief moment in time she had both of us together, presumably trying to get us to rake the blanket of leaves that have covered the back yard. And while we appear to be complying with that request, we were less obedient with her desire to "take a nice picture of you two in the leaves." I still can't believe you aren't here turning 50 with your friends and family. You would have had a lot to say about this birthday and you would also have been amazed with your parents, both so healthy and fun at 80. We miss you. #hoffmanlove #1984 #geraldineferraro #philtheworldwithlove #truthormarilyn #missingmyphee ❤️ (at Fairport, New York)
Had to go visit #waltermondale because I was thinking about his 1984 running mate #geraldineferraro Hard to believe it has been 32 years. (at University of Minnesota Law School)
