SA has a lot of good and accessible singles, some of which you’ve probably heard. Like at the very least you probably know “Alive with the Glory of Love” and/or “Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too” which are both on the first SA full length, ...Is A Real Boy.

...Is A Real Boy might be sort of an easy entrance point if you’re looking for like, the most straight-ahead pop punk SA does (which, I mean, isn’t a lot - Bemis always has something else going on, he’s not really a four chord kind of guy). My fav song on it is probably “The Writhing South” and it’s fairly representative of the sound of the record: 

You could try “The Futile” as well if you’re on the fence. ...Is A Real Boy is a double LP though so it’s a bit of a beast to take on if you aren’t sure how much Bemis you’re willing to commit to.

The second record is a lot. Like, it’s also a double LP but it’s way more assertive about it. In Defense of the Genre is the one I used to reference as my fav SA album because it’s so expansive and weird, and it’s still super close to my heart, but it’s either going to be the perfect gateway or the worst one. Like, pros: if you spend any time in the scene in your listening, you’ll know a lot of the guest vocalists on this record. I mean here’s the wikipedia page, take a gander. That said it comes a little bit more from Max Bemis’s self-indulgent side as a songwriter, like it’s beloved by me but it is maybe a bit of an ego project. That said here’s the track with the puke kink: 

PROBABLY MY PICK FOR AN ALBUM TO START WITH, and man I should’ve led with this but like whatever pacing is fake, but if you want to do a Whole Album and not dig around for singles or gems or through massive fucking double LPs, is the fourth record, Anarchy, My Dear. This one is actually my fav SA record, it’s a little more... melodic, I guess? Than the first two especially. I think it really holds together as a good collection of songs that have hooks and don’t take like an overabundance of commitment to stick around for, but still makes a pretty cohesive musical gesture. Also it has The Most Killer Bass of any SA record (which is like! very hard to come by in this scene lmao!), Bemis plays it on the record but Adam Siska joined for a little while to play it live. Anyway here’s my fav song off Anarchy, My Dear: 

If you like the ideas behind In Defense of the Genre but you want it significantly more uhhhhh polished and grown up? I would super recommend Hebrews. It’s a lot less yell-y and a little more think-y and I think it has a more well-curated selection of guest vocalists but the “do a record with cool other musicians” thing is the same. It manages to still feel like a record though and not quite so much throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks, which is how IDotG vibes to me ten years on. For example here’s the opening track, which features Matt Pryor and Chris Conley: 

I’ve left a couple records off here because I don’t think they’re good gateways, but the third album (self-titled) has a few really solid singles and the most recent album, I Don’t Think It Is, is kinda more aggro and atonal than anything else SA has put out. I’d definitely go for it after you’ve lived in the Bemis sound-world for a little while though, it’s really neat. Like every album is good, but some are good-er for an introduction and I’d maybe save these two for later. 

I will say that a huge draw for SA for me is how reliant on and aware of his musical lineage Max Bemis is. Like he does a lot of work specifically with Chris Conley of Saves the Day (they have a couple records out under the handle Two Tongues) and has been pretty vocal since long before they knew one another about Saves being the band that made him want to be in a band. Which is neat. 

He also has an imprint on Equal Vision where he seems to basically sign his friends so they can put out music unhindered, like, he’s sort of a fan of the health of the music he loves first and foremost which I think is really... Good and cool. Also I interviewed him once and told him I wanted to see him tour with Reggie again and he announced a tour with Reggie like 2 months later so [shrug emoji]
