How to Prevent the Common Cold
In keeping with my flu shot season theme, I want to give you all some hints on how to stay healthy this flu season.
There are many other (200+!!!) viruses besides the influenza virus that may not kill you but will make you feel sick with the common cold. They have some interesting names such as Rhinovirus and Coronavirus.
They are spread from person to person in three main ways.
1.Hand contact from person to person or from contaminated surfaces to person.
2. Small particle droplets from sneezing and coughing.
3. Large particle droplets that require close contact.
Viruses can live on surfaces such as shopping carts, countertops and doorknobs for several hours. Much of the spread is due to touching these surfaces then touching our eyes, nose and mouth. You can also spread your cold when you cough on your hands and then touch these surfaces as well.
There are some things that you can do to prevent getting and spreading the common cold. These include:
1. Cough into crook of your arm or tissue instead of into your hand
2. Don't touch your eye, nose or mouth without cleaning your hands first.
3. Clean your hands with alcohol based hand sanitizers. Wait till they dry in about 10-20 seconds before touching your face. Have them in your car when you get out of a public place and rub some on.
4 .Spray surfaces with Lysol spray. The phenol and alcohol in these sprays helps kill viruses.
7 Exercise five times per week for 30 minutes.
Here is a cute link for you to see how germs spread from Bill Nye the Science Guy...
