Bohnen in den Ohren haben
literally: to have beans in the ears
to not listen
Gus Backus was born in 1937 in Southhampton, NY, USA as Donald Edgar Backus. While being on military duty, the hobby musician joined the Doo-Wop group The Del-Vikings, with whome he had two top 10 hits charts in 1957.
The same year he was PCSed to the U. S. Air Force base near Wiesbaden, Germany. In 1959, he applied at a German record company and was invited for test recordings. They contracted him as a singer of German cover versions of US hits because they thought that his American accent would make the cover versions more authentic. His most successful time was between 1960 and 1965, when he performed original songs, beginning with “Da sprach der alte Häuptling der Indianer” (”Thus Said The Old Chief Of The Indians”) and ending with the earworm “Bohnen in die Ohren” (”Beans In The Ears”). In the second half of the 1960s, the management of the record company pushed him more and more towards drinking, party, and carnival songs, which turned out to destroy his career. He participated in no less than 31 German movies during that decade.
After he was divorced from his second German wife, he quit the music business and went back to the USA, where he worked as a foreman on oil fields in Texas. Media in Germany pronounced him dead.
When his third wife died in 2001, he moved back to Germany, reconciled with his second wife and eventually re-married her. Revival attempts failed to have groundbreaking success. He lived in Germering near Munich and died on February 21, 2019.
Henry Valentino – Im Wagen vor mir (In the car in front of me)
This 1977 schlager is about a man who keeps driving behind the old, slow car of a young girl, admiring her beauty (mind that most cars did not have a head restraint these days, so the driver was visible). He is happy and relaxed as he is for once not in a hurry and has time to drive slowly instead of having to speed. The girl, however, is scared by behavior of the older guy in his big, fast car following her instead of overtaking and driving away. She imagines that the man may do her harm, abduct her, or may even be the police in plain clothes. Finally, she decides to leave the Autobahn to hide behind the bushes, being upset that she will return home late now. The guy goes on driving towards his destination, which he will reach in two hours, says bye-bye to the girl in his mind, regretting that he will never see her again.
Henry Valentino is a pseudonym of composer Hans Blum, born in 1928. He had several hits in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, but his fame faded in the 1980s. He still appears in talk shows from time to time.
Im Wagen vor mir is Hans Blum’s most popular composition. It has become an evergreen and has been covered several times, mostly as parodies. Blum once recalled how he was inspired to write the song when he drove on the Autobahn and saw a person with beautiful flowing blonde hair in the car in front of him. After admiring the magnificent head of hair for a while, imagining the beautiful girl wearing it, he decided to overtake and discovered – much to his surprise – that it belonged to a man who also had a majestic beard.
Wann wird’s mal wieder richtig Sommer?
by Rudi Carrell
When is it going to be a real summer again? It has been raining here non-stop since two days already, temperatures hover around 12 °C and it will stay this way for the rest of the week. Help me, I’m drowning and freezing to death!
Ich bin ein kleiner Hund by Loriot (aka Vicco von Bülow)
The sad song of Wum the dog about his life makes himself cry at the end.
*heult*
I am a little dog, and you know what, I am healthy because I have since a couple of days a wet nose. I also have a tail and it is very there where it belongs in my opinion and aside from that anyway.
Unfortunately, a dog like me is despite everything incorrigible, that’s what bothers me with the whole thing. Bam bam, bam ba, what are little dogs good for, after all? I'm sitting all day long on my chair and contemplate, that can’t really be the general idea. Bam bam, bam ba, what are little dogs good for, after all?
Oh, sometimes, I wish very much, that I would be an important dog and would not just eat my bowl empty. Oh, if I only had a motorcycle!
Now, I am only playing in the backyard and everybody thinks I am stupid oh, if that, oh if that just would not be true. I’m jumping up and down and I hope every now and then that some time something may happen, please.
But unfortunately, a dog like me...
I believe, I only thought, I just mean, what did I just want to do? There was something, oh if that just would not be true. I'm sitting all day long on my chair and contemplate, that can’t really be the general idea.
