also.. the food in germany, i'm never going to be able to get over it
every morning we had a huge breakfast.. fresh buns, all kinds of meats, fresh veggies straight from the garden, cheeses, fresh eggs from their next door neighbours chickens, homemade jams, it was unreal
midday we'd have coffee & cake, then in the evening we'd do another huge meal.. this night in particular we had rouladen, pork, potato salad, caprese salad, cheeses, bread, potatoes, fresh veggies, so much stuff.
i'm back in canada now 🥲 the past ten days were absolutely incredible. it was more of a visiting family trip vs. a sight seeing trip, so there were only two days where we actually went somewhere ~touristy~ to see stuff.. 90% of the trip was just hanging out with family, which was wonderful
i have never felt more welcomed and loved by my family over in germany 😭 but especially by my cousin (twice removed) margrit. i wish i had the opportunity to meet her sooner. she's 81 now so i don't know how many more times i'll get to see her. she didn't speak a single word of english, but told everyone that it didn't matter because "we understood each other". and she kept calling me "mäuschen", which means little mouse.. which is what my omi used to call me when i was little 😭 she was just so loving and she made me feel like i'd known her my entire life. i'm tearing up just thinking about her, it was so hard saying goodbye yesterday.
so, the main point of this trip was to take my great uncle back to germany since he hasn't gone back since he moved to canada when he was a teenager. it was so interesting walking around with him in the town he grew up in with my grandpa, he had so many stories, and we even got to go inside the house he grew up in. here he is showing us how he remembered he used to climb around the side of the house when he was a kid :')
there was one night where we went over to an old family friends house, and watched old home videos that he, karl, took back in 1994 when he came to visit us in canada. i'm just a little kid in the videos, and my parents and grandparents looked so young!! it was amazing seeing those videos. my omi and opa were in them too, and i was this 🤏 close to bawling my eyes out when i saw them. karl had also saved a bottle of whiskey that my omi gifted him back in 1970 (!!!) and he poured us all a glass, so I got to sip on a drink that my omi bought while we watched the videos. such an emotional night.
there's two pictures of me and my mom back in 1994, and at the end of the night karl gave me that wooden bunny as a gift, and said that he hopes i think of my time in germany whenever i look at it 😭 such a sweet guy.
family photos! ❤️ anyway, it was amazing finally getting to meet all of my family on my mom's side. my grandparents immigrated to canada in the 60s, so that side of my family in canada has always been so small, since most of the family is still in germany. my mom's been going to germany every year since 2010 (usually with my grandparents), so i'm grateful that i was able to go with her this time. it was so lovely finally getting to meet everyone over there. we hope to go back in the next year or two, next time hopefully i'll bring my fiance too! ❤️ and i promised margrit that i'd get better at speaking german by the next time we see each other ❤️

Hello from Germany 👋🥰🇩🇪 it is so beautiful here. We're staying with my first cousin twice removed, in the little town where my grandpa and his brother grew up. Everyone here has been so welcoming.. no one speaks English, and I don't speak very good German, but they've made me feel so welcomed 😭🩷 they even put up a Canadian flag in their backyard for us 🩷
It's 9am here right now, day 2 of my trip, and I'm feeling more used to the time change today. It's only like 3am back home. Yesterday was rough though with the jet lag.
Yesterday we walked around town, and mostly hung out with family in their beautiful backyard. They've got this really nice gazebo. And oh man the food.. we had an amazing home cooked German dinner last night. Love love love love. Alles ist so schön 🩷
