The Hunger Games! My First Movie Review!!
The Hunger Games” is a movie that was created from a novel by Suzanne Collins. Collins stated that the inspiration to write The Hunger Games came from observing competition on a reality show ,footage of the invasion of Iraq, the Greek myth of Theseus, and the Roman Gladiator games.
The movie from the beginning, slightly puzzled me .In the beginning , I though that the children of district 12 were back in a futuristic Holocaust. Then it turns from the Holocaust treatment and severe poverty into something refined, like Gladiator meets a game show.
Children from ages 12 to 18 are selected at random to represent the district in which they live as tributes. One male and one female are chosen in a lottery drawing to fight not only one another, but also 11 additional districts that surround what is called the Capitol. Once these tributes are chosen, they are pampered in the Capitol while they train for battle. Only one victor is allowed, as they not only fight to the death against each other, but also against the weather, infection, hunger, and animal mutations created by the game planners.
I feel director Gary Ross does an amazing job of making scenes from the book come to life in the film. For an example when the heroine Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence who was last seen playing the younger version of Mystique in the prequel” X-Men First Class”) volunteers herself in place of her sister Prim, her screams of “No, No, No” are very chilling and heart wrenching. One of the most dramatic scenes of the movie is when Rue is killed by Marvel the tribute from District 1, the pain and fear of dying is felt.
I thought the film overall was awesome. Despite being a big-budget production, the film has a indie movie quality compared to teen fad novels like the Harry Potter or Twilight series. The film does a great job of refraining from anything too over-the-top, which it could have done considering the subject matter. We all know that witchcraft and vampires are not real. But The Hunger Games, despite the fact that it seems impossible, is very real. It’s true that teens may not be fighting in battle arenas to the death, but they are certainly caught up in the idea of “making an impression.” With social networking, teens are aware of the personas they create and promote. Caught up in the world of reality television, kids are taught that independence and performance are everything. One of my favorite messages in The Hunger Games, is the promotion of interdependence and the need to stand together.
