Get 2 Know: Nick Astro's CAKEatersTV + "Put Me On" Video
Consisting mostly of film, cartoons and other pop-culture topics, Nick Astro’s debut project #SUPER16 showcased the artist’s talents and his undeniable charisma to whoever was ready to listen. And while it’s true that the ‘tape introduced Astro’s music to a larger audience, it still managed to fly under a lot of people’s radar. A post by a major blog or magazine could have help propelled the multi-faceted Astro’s career, but we’ll have to wait until his next project ListenToNewMusic EP drops to see if those so-called “tastemakers” actually start paying attention to quality music and support his cause. That’s also basically the premise of the Legit-assisted “Put Me On” record, which can be found on #SUPER16. The Chicago representative recently formed a video production company called CAKEatersTV and announced its inception through a video for “Put Me On” and the fan-favorite “Scarlett Johansson.” I hit up Astro with a handful of questions to discuss the newly released video as well as the CAKEatersTV company.
The new video for “Put Me On” is the official introduction to your CAKEatersTV company, what is exactly is the company about?
CAKEatersTV is my first real attempt at making something bigger than me. I've noticed a ton of thriving rappers that are skilled in others things outside of just rap. You got Julian Malone who produces his own beats, engineers and does his own videos, Calez who also produces his own material, ProbCause does fine arts, I think Chance’s one-two punch is that he's insanely gifted at marketing himself even way before he got signed to CAA, ShowYouSuck too I believe is a genius in marketing --coincidentally graduating from the Art Institute in marketing--while also assisting with Floyd's art gallery "Arpentry," my brother Auggie The 9th draws and is an outright perfectionist when it comes to his art, and me we'll I also produce my own music, direct, edit, and compose the visual effects for videos. The CAKEaters is my attempt (not limited to rappers) to attract those who are skilled in any aspect of the production of film/video whether thats dramatic or comedic writing, music composition, location, sound recording, etc. The funny thing about all of this is that CAKEaters has one member so far, me. However both ShowYouSuck and Legit said to mark them down as writers for the company. So I guess we're growing already.
How did y’all come up with the idea of the small green-screen you and Legit are holding?
I actually have an iPhone video, that I will be releasing once I hit 1042 followers, that encompasses the same idea. When I was writing the treatment for the video it was actually a last minute idea to just throw it in there. When I make songs my goal is to get you to envision everything I'm saying, so if I make a video now I really got to show you what I was talking about.
“Put Me On” is one of the oldest tracks from #Super16, why did you decide to give the visual treatment?
I think the message in “Put Me On” is relatable to so many artist on the come up. Quite honestly it is getting bad when an artist;s status is purely defined on what outlets show that artist love. I've never been on X magazine or X blog before, but that surely doesn't mean my music or videos aren't good. What's crazy is a blog could damn near be doing themselves a disservice by not posting certain artist because in most cases the artist will blow up 100xs bigger than the blogs it’s being posted on. And now they were sleeping and missed out on the action. That's what the chorus "Put Me On, I'll Put You On" means.
You stated that this video is a prelude to “Scarlett Johansson's,” what can we expect from it?
That you won't expect anything that happens. Whatever video people have in their heads what it might be, what it could be, it's not going to be none of that.
Finally, what else does the CAKEatersTV team have in the works?
TheCAKEaters is also the name of a comedy web series that will feature all my rapper buddies. This will premiere later in the year. Also, TheCAKEaters is the name of my first short film that will premiere most likely in 2016, co-starring my homie Zigg from THEMpeople. Just expect more cool visuals this year.
The Alternative Trap sound --which is composed by spaced out and mellow vibes--played a huge role in Lucki Eck$' meteoric rise to become one of Chicago most buzzing up-and-comers shortly after the 'tape dropped this past Summer. Without a doubt, Lucki should take a lot of the credit for capitalizing on the production with his metaphysical rhymes and amicable flow. Nonetheless, today I want to spotlight one of the project's main producers, whose sound helped Alternative Trap exceed expectations and obtain critical acclaim.
Plu2o Nash is a multi-talented Chicago native who first started making juke tracks back in middle-school and eventually progressed into a more polished set of production skills. Besides beats, this kid is also a monster behind the lens as he already shoots videos with a peculiar style that is very fitting to his vision. He directed Lucki's video for "Love It" (which he also produced) and it currently stands at 10,000 views, proving people reacted extremely well to the slow-motion editing mixed with the in-and-out of focus transitions made by Plu2o. This kid has the talent and the team to achieve big things in the coming months. With that being said, I recently hit him up and linked up on a quick Q&A to get to know the artist better. Check it out after the jump.
For those who are unaware, who's Plu2o Nash?
Plu2o Nash is a 18 year-old producer and videographer from Chicago
When and how did you start getting involved with music production and videos?
I used to make juke tracks and house music with my friends from like 6th to 9th grade because around that time kids my age used to footwork at the rink in Markham. I used to always think like that shit was raw as hell. Then my friend Statik Shock was like “I got the program for that shit” and I been fucking with it ever since. I started fucking with videos the end of my sophomore year during the Summer of 2012. I’m in this group called The Legion and my friend KG used to always have this weak-ass camera until me and him had put on for a Nikon and I’ve been shooting ever since.
What and/or who were your influences growing up?
My influences are really my guys, Jay-Z, Kanye and Lex Luger
You have a production credit on Tink's latest mixtape, Boss Up, how did you link up with her?
Shit. I just made the beat to “Take Me There”, thought “I can hear her on that” and then sent it to her e-mail.
You also produced and shot the video for Lucki Eck$' "Love It", what was the concept behind the video?
The concept of the video is really about showing the fans of the song what Lucki Eck$ loves and to show people the clique he is apart of, which is 197 O$G
You're arguably Lucki's biggest collaborator, what are you guys working on at the moment?
Haha Man, honestly just a lot of raw shit.
Finally, what do you have planned for the following months? Can we expect an album from you soon?
For the following months I plan to work with more up-and-coming artists and nah I doubt you’ll hear an album from me haha.
