If you guys want to carry on enjoying anti UK memes you’re going to have to start being a bit more mindful.
I’m going to start by saying that this is in no way an attack or accusation at anyone. It’s simply an observation from someone who lives in the UK and has grown up with the various degrees of xenophobia that exist over here. Over the past couple of months I’ve noticed a slow drift from: this just looks like baby’s first xenophobia (can be excused by cultural difference and retaliation towards UK baby’s first xenophobia), to: yeah this is baby’s first xenophobia.
The speed at which people have become comfortable with jokingly dehumanising or wishing death on people based on where they come from is a bit concerning, and the fact that it’s expanding out to other countries (ones that in the UK are usually targeted as a sort of xenophobia lite) is also not a good thing. Substitute the UK for the US and you have something that looks identical to the base line of Xenophobia you get over here. The cultural difference and retaliation are beginning to not really matter now, because you’re starting to hit people who I know from experience are already being hit. Also having looked at the sources for some of these posts, you should be aware that some of them are not jokes, and are not only written by people who genuinely believe what they are saying, but by people who are also proudly and openly xenophobic and/or racist.
Finally I just want to make it absolutely clear, this isn’t a ‘don’t mock the UK’ post. This place is a shit hole and if the memes sounded less xenophobic/classist/ableist to my UK ears I’d be loudly joining in. It’s more a ‘I’ve noticed these are leading down the path of discrimination towards already persecuted groups’ type posts. Not only that but they divide us in a way that plays directly into the hands of the ruling class of both our countries. I mean they’re such easy targets, have you seen our PM?
