So, I don’t usually post this day on social media. I’m not sure why. But I guess, I always just want it over with and once it is, I’m relieved. I went to get my mammogram today. And, my appointment happened to fall on the second to last day of breast cancer awareness month. When I went into the room, the technician went over my chart and asked me about my mom. She said, “How old was your mom when she was diagnosed?” I told her 44. She said “Wow, that is really young.” At the time, I never realized it was – I was 14. But as I was there, I started thinking about it. It is really young. And it got me thinking. Right now, I’m five years older than my mother was when she was diagnosed. Every single year I talk about it at this time and try to educate people about breast cancer awareness and early detection. But it wasn’t until I got to thinking more during the ultrasound part of the exam that I get each year, I never talk about it personally. And lately, we have heard about more and more women not getting checked due to the pandemic or being uninsured or putting aside these appointments for another time. And I know that after October passes, we all seem to talk about it less. I am posting this today asking you if you know somebody who needs a mammogram, please send them a gentle reminder to go get one. We shouldn’t be reminding each other only in the month of October, it should be all the time. I want to try to do my part. -xo Tamsen PS.
