Okay, so I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. 30 days of exercise from not having done anything for months.
Day 1 - I decided that I was going to kick start my challenge with going for a run. My partner and the dog came along to give me moral support and I’m thankful they did. First challenge, trying to find clothes to fit! So I have loads of clothing to exercise in as I used to be really active. However, I’ve put on over a stone since wearing any of these clothes. Instant thought - why am I doing this to myself? Feeling - DEFLATED and UNMOTIVATED.
Once I found some clothes that (uncomfortably) fit, we went for our run around the park nearby, using a running app to track my progress. My heart was pounding, my chest felt tight and my legs felt like I was running in quicksand but I managed to run for 16 minutes with only a couple of 30 second walking breaks. Getting home I felt PROUD and a sense of ACHIEVEMENT! I checked the running app and it said I had run nearly 5km in 16 minutes. I was amazed and shared my success on social media. These feelings did not last long, as it turns out I would have to be a marathon runner to run that fast! Feeling - EMBARRASSMENT.
Then I had to remind myself, “hey, at least you did it and so what if you made a mistake? ”
Day 2 - The plan was to go to yoga after work. My aim was to leave Nottingham by 4pm and get back in time for yoga at 6pm. This did not happen! I managed to get on the motorway at 5pm which meant I was going to miss my yoga class. So I decided another run, using a different running app would be good. Unfortunately due to the weather, both motorways I use to travel home were closed. So a 1 & 1/2 hour journey home turned into a 3 & 1/2 hour journey. I finally got home at 8:30pm after leaving my house at 7am. I felt physically tired and drained but knew I had to exercise. I decided a short core work out would be all I could muster. This left me feeling GUILTY, as I felt that I was cheating.
My evening reminder to myself, ‘Be kind to myself’. It’s called a challenge for a reason, it isn’t easy creating a new habit and change does not happen over night.
