Basketball Story

Girls' Basketball Team Begins a New Season

Almost the whole varsity team graduated last year. Varsity Coach Tony Vis and the Kennedy basketball team are trying to bounce back with a very young team.

Last year, the varsity girls’ basketball team didn’t end the way they wanted to. They still worked together as a team to win several games.

They were the first metro team in six years to be ranked #1 for most of the season.

They didn’t make the post season after a loss to No. 8 Davenport North in the regional final by four points. The team was still very successful during the regular season.

The 2016-2017 basketball season consists of roughly 40 girls. Each team having around 10 girls and freshmen having 15.  It starts Nov. 7 and ends mid-end Feb.

Coach Vis is in his 23rd year for coaching basketball. "I believe basketball is the best sport because there is a lot of teamwork and a group of individuals have to come together," Vis said.

The first game is Nov. 28 away at Muscatine High School.The girls will be playing around 22 games for the regular season.

The team needs to work on playing together and getting varsity experience this year.

Improvement can be made in fundamentals. They are going to have to put in a great deal of hard work in to achieve their goals.

"I have been playing basketball since second grade," Reegan Deputy, fr., said. "I am looking forward to growing in my fundamentals, building relationships, and having fun."

Kennedy basketball has a great tradition for having a good number of good players.

"I am looking forward to playing a fun game with all my teammates," Laura Nus, so., said. "I want to win some games for my last season of basketball."

Vis just wants to watch all the players improve. He believes the next couple years will be successful with the talent the team has.

The coaches are excited about this new puzzle they are going to have to figure out.  As each piece is put together the team gets closer and closer to achieving their goals.
