It’s been a long time now I’ve been so curious as to where my families stem from. I would love to know for myself of course, but also for my kids. I am a second - generation immigrant and my parents come from central American countries, Costa Rica and Honduras. My mother’s side of the family seems to be of mestizo or mostly European descent just due to obvious physical features. My father however is dark skinned with more indigenous or afro Latino like features and his siblings look similar, but admittingly they all have different fathers...so finding out where his bloodline stems from is what I’m the most curious about. I’m looking into DNA test kits currently and which ones would work best for me. Also, doing a lot of research on the history of the peoples that inhabited those regions around the 15-18th+ centuries.
so far these are the kits I’m considering for anyone else interested in maybe finding out where their ancestors are from too.
1.) AncestryDNA 2.) 23ANDME Health + Ancestry 3.) MyHeritageDNA
different types of DNA tests:
Y DNA (Y chromosome) testing. This test is for MEN only and gives information pertaining to your father’s side only.
Mitochondrial DNA testing. This can be used by both men and women alike and gives information pertaining to your mother’s side only.
Autosomal DNA Testing. This can also be used be men and women and can trace your ancestral history on BOTH sides of your parent’s family tree. Paternal and maternal.
