spoiling a hamster with @geumum.

with gusgus happily rolling around in his new hamster ball, goeun takes calculated steps not to kick the thing as she carries two bags of new bedding to the bathroom, tiptoeing to shove them into a shelf with other hamster-related items.

this is probably the most impulsive decision she’s ever made right after quitting her internship.

gusgus bumps into her ankle and she crouches down to pick him up in the plastic ball. yeah, how could you possibly regret getting a hamster, let alone resist getting one? she has the dedication for it, and a little assistance too — though it’s kinda like a co-ownership thing at this point. not that she’s complaining.

she hears the door open just as she walks out of the bathroom with the hamster in her hands. “hey, sorry it’s a mess.” she greets elijah before opening the hatch in the ball. “i just replaced his bedding.” scooping him out, she holds her palm out with gusgus on it for her friend.

“gotta fix his house and everything now.”

if there’s anything yanjie’s learnt in his time in seoul, it’s the number one rule of all korean society (if you don’t want to be seen as a loser or something along those lines): crowded and alone do not go together. if you eat alone in a crowded place, then it’s even more taboo and thou shalt go to hell for that, yadda yadda.

so when he spots an empty seat in the stuffed room across a boy who looks fairly approachable, he sees an opportunity — #1: to make friends, and #2: not look like outcasts together. kill two birds with one stone and all that, right?

confidence makes up for uncertainty, as it always does. yanjie’s got absolutely nothing to lose, so stupid courage looks good on him (or so he’s been told). there’s no hesitance as he weaves his way amongst the people and stands right before the other male, clutching his drink and laptop close to his chest. yanjie taps the table once, twice, to get his attention, proffering his brightest smile, and says (in his obviously top-notch korean):

“hi! can i sit on you?”

she’s either hard of hearing or in denial. he repeats himself for the fourth time. “i don’t know how to climb a tree, ma’am.”

with one indignant hand on her hip, she spits, “isn’t this part of your job?”

“i’m sure you’re thinking of something else, ma’am,” like a coconut harvester, or firefighter. he frowns, thinking back to grey-tinged days when he’d scaled fence after fence like an olympic hurdler. back then, it might have translated. he might have dared to try. today, his joints are achey, he’s run out of cold-hot patches, and he’d rather just sit this one out. “anyone here who can help?”

a face emerges from the small crowd of onlookers. sung already knows where this is going.
