GF Product Review: Bakeworks Gluten Free Hot Cross Buns
Every March since I've lived in NZ, I get to a certain point of the grocery store and my nostrils suddenly become filled with the unmistakable scent of freshly baked (or freshly stocked) hot cross buns. The sweet, spicy, cinnamony smell would put me into a robot-like trance and before I knew it, I'd be automatically loading them into the shopping cart without even realizing it. Obviously since my Celiac diagnosis I've not been able to do this. Quite frankly, it kills me every year. But when April hits, they leave the shelves and I completely forget about hot cross buns until I am taunted by their scent again the following year.
This past weekend, while accompanying a friend on a gluten free shopping trip, I noticed a new package in the GF bread section. Gluten free hot cross buns!! Without even smelling them, the package was immediately tucked under my arm, ready for purchase.
I got them home, cut them open and there was that smell! :) I separated one bun, put it in the microwave for about 20 seconds to soften it up and then just lightly toasted the top under the grill (broiler) in my oven. I slathered butter all over it and took a bite. Heaven.
Now, the brand that makes these, Bakeworks, also makes my favorite GF pull-apart rolls so I knew they would be good. When warmed, they are light and squishy, like real hot cross buns. Even my husband partook without complaint. I would recommend these to any gluten intolerant person who's been missing hot cross buns like I have. These are about $7-8 for a pack of six buns, depending on where you buy them from. They are only available until the end of next week, so I urge you to buy them while you can, New Zealand!
