Tweet Riot ends up in #Uranus
We came up with: TWEET URANUS. Considering the serious subjects (ie Egyptian demonstrations and freedom of speech) that inspired us, the result can appear strange.
We had a big issue on the saturday when we realized that the game was conceptually powerful but that the user experience was nonexistent. This is where having two experienced game designers in the group really made a difference. While I was very much trying to crack the basic concept, they took steps backs and looked at what good game mechanics could be implemented. This gave birth to TWEET URANUS. It came full circle as we realized at the very end it could have worked with the hashtag #egypt, with only slight tweaks.
As of sunday, the game is a demonstration of tweets with #Bieber or WeLoveTokioHotel, which aliens from #URANUS have infiltrated. You must shoot and get rid of all #URANUS aliens. If you mistakenly shoot a Bieber / Tokio Hotel fan tweet, you will lose some serious points. Your only way to earn these points back is to retweet the alien-like fan tweet you just shot. Caution: retweeting random Bieber tweets can cause some social side-effects.
You can also just let the aliens through and concentrate your fire on fan tweets. Doing this will actually give you enough time to read the subtle puns made by the aliens in English, French, Spanish, and Lithuanian (thanks google translate). Here are a few:

These puns are what our tired brains came up with. But we are now having more thoughts on what the essential concept of turning a twitter stream into a demonstration, and something smarter and more polished could very well follow.

Another Great Global Game Jam comes to an End!
What a crazy weekend!
48 hours, 44 countries, 170 locations, 6500 participants, almost 1500 games, one weekend, one theme ("Extinction").
Once again we broke our own record for the
single largest game jam ever!

Global Game Jam '11
Yup. Didn't get my A-Game-A-Week game in by Friday... AGAIN.
Valid reason though - I was attending the Global Game Jam for 2011 - my first one.
Didn't really know what to expect, but was definitely looking forward to it anyway. It was cool. Ups & downs and stress and no sleep and barbeques and some very cool games at the end of the day. Plus a lot of fun...
My team ended up getting a somewhat playable game out in the end... but we cut it pretty fine. I was MIA for Saturday night (friend's B'day) and got back Sunday morning to find that the game had made very little progress and seemed to be going down a completely different direction... with less than 5 hrs left (out of 48 hrs) on the clock. I sat down with my main programmer (who had not slept AT ALL in the previous 32 hrs) and SMASHED OUT a playable demo with a heap of potential.
We were never going to win any major prizes. We aimed pretty low so we could get something out in the time limit, and we got close to where I was aiming... but I feel like some areas could've been better. It was still fun anyway.
I will post more details soon... maybe some pics of the game... or the executable itself. Look out for it soon.

Global Games Jam 2011 - Creeping into the last day
And so it is, the final stretch. There's 11 projects posted up so far, in various states of completion - I think the hardest task is still to come, where the teams are really going to have the reel in amibitious projects. the Veterans know this, and their thinking accordingly, the newbies seem blissfully unaware...
It's tools down at 3pm - presentations at 4pm and then home for some sleep.
I'd take some videos / or some photos but peeps seem a bit thi on the ground so I'll do that in the morning.
