Rio’s face had lit up when she said he could take her anywhere for dinner and he offered this place. Something glowing and sincere behind his pitch black eyes as he held her in his arms. Like she was doing something meaningful for him. It was just dinner, right?

They had been seated at a huge, round table with an amazing view of the open kitchen. A large booth seat with a high back that Beth could sink in to like a couch. And she felt so content. In her floaty black dress, sitting at Rio’s side as he rested his hand on her thigh, circling her kneecap with his thumb. Complimenting him in his sleek black-on-black ensemble. Watching the chef’s make hand-pulled Udon noodles, the elastic dough flying through the air in intricate rope patterns. The way she giggled at the spectacle. The way he watched her as she laughed. Warm and affectionate. And with that something meaningful that made her heart ache.

It was perfect.

Until he got hold of the chopsticks.

Summary: Set shortly after 3.11. Mick throws a big hot tub party at his place to celebrate the successful launch of Boland Bubbles. High awkwardness ensues.

“Oh, you’re planning a beach wedding now?” Ruby asks with a grin, the thing only faltering when the doors open again but - - no. Just a nurse, brandishing her clipboard. Still no Dean. Typical.

Beth hums, like she hadn’t even noticed, looking back at Ruby, her blue eyes bright, and there’s something that feels like Beth in it again, something warm, impish, as she wrinkles her nose, considering, and Ruby can’t help it, the way it feels like a key that unlocks her.

For the 2020 Good Girls Prompt-a-thon: Rio catches/finds out about Dean cheating AGAIN (not from Beth) and goes off on Dean bc he just doesn’t understand how he could do that to Elizabeth. Dean totally realizes he was right, that Rio loves Beth, and says so out loud to him.

(part of the prompt-a-thon list from @goodgirlsficrecs) notes: early season 3, after the pregnancy mishap, canon divergence, probably more plot than you wanted.

Beth’s been here before and that fact should be comforting but nothing rarely is as it seems anymore. On the one hand, she’s satisfied that her and Rio have come to an understanding—neither of them are actively trying to kill the other. Yet, at the same time, their conversation and demeanor towards one another is uncomfortably icy to say the least. She remembers when their conversations and body language was fluid, magnetic, a sense of partnership that she doesn’t think they’ll ever get back.

But she doesn’t know how they can be anything else other than former shells of who they once were, not after three bullets that feel like thirty pieces of silver in her hands.
