In the Ghanaian culture, Adinkra symbols represent objects that encapsulate evocative messages that convey traditional wisdom, aspects of life, or the environment. These visual symbols originally created by the Ashanti that represent distinct meanings, often linked with proverbs. The top symbol on my shoulder is the Gye Nyame, which is a reflection of the deeply religious character of the Ghanaian people. The symbol immediately under is the Akofena, the sword of war which depicts courage and valor. Underneath that is the Wawa Aba or the seed of the wawa tree, which is said to be on of the hardest seeds known in Africa and a symbol of toughness and perseverance. To the right of that is the Nyansapo wisdom knot, which is a symbol of ingenuity, intelligence, and patience. Above that is the Sankofa bird, which represents having to reflect and learn from the past in order to grow. The last symbol behind my arm is an Akan saying, " Nea ope se obedi hene daakye no, firi ase su som ansa." Meaning he who wants to be king in the future, must first learn to serve.
