#Naneghat #trek on Independence Day 2015
8 of us decided to celebrate the spirit of Independence at a place that is almost 2200 years old! And that place is Naneghat.

The 'real' history of Naneghat, that has to be taken with a pinch of salt:
If you ask any trekker why Naneghat is so-called? They will tell you that in ancient times, toll in form of coins (nane means coins in Marathi) was collected from traders who used this route to cross from Junnar to Kalyan or vice versa. And to put a stamp of authority on that answer, the trekkers will tell you that its evidence is still intact in the form of a huge cistern in which the traders used to deposit their taxes, by tossing in a coin inside that cistern.
But there is more than this story inscribed on the walls of the cave at Naneghat. In the year 180-170 BC, King Satkarni & his Queen Nayanika or Naganika created the caves at Naneghat. This King belonged to Satvahan dynasty, whose ancestors were King Krishna & King Simukha. The inscription further states that King Satkarni performed the Aswemedha & Rajasuya sacrifices in commemoration of his victories & proclaimed himself the Samrat or the Emperor.
King Satkarni, Queen Naganika or Nayanika & their minor son Vedasri had their own life-sized statues created in the cave, which were then destroyed as time passed and only their names below the statues remain at Naneghat. We could not find these inscriptions or even if found were not recognised by us. The script used in these inscriptions is Brahmi.
Now we come to the question of why Naneghat is so-called...
Nanaa was a Goddess whose vehicle was Lion and was worshipped by King Satkarni & Queen Naganika or Nayanika. The coins belonging to Satvahan dynasty depict Goddess Nanaa as only a lion with crescent & may be with a spear in her hand. From Goddess Nanaa's name, came Naneghat.
How much of this history is true is unknown to me.

Base station: Kalyan.
Base Village: Vaishakhare (after Tokawade).
Naneghat is marked here on the map.
Dynamic map showing our trekking route and important landmarks is here.
There are ST buses going to Malshej Ghat from Kalyan ST bus depot. You must get down at Vaishakhare. There is board on right hand side of the road marking the entrance route for Naneghat trekkers. But while returning, you may not find ST buses or vehicles dropping you back at Kalyan. So we had hired a jeep accomodating 10 passengers + 1 driver.
The trek route to Naneghat starts with a muddy path in the jungle and gradually becomes steeper and rockier as you near the rocky mountain of Naneghat. The mountain is prominent with a thumb-like peak called Nanacha Angtha on the right side of the mountain. You will see a V-shape gap below and to the left of Nanacha Angtha. That is the Naneghat Pass.
The entire route is easy - meaning no deep valleys immediately beside you. The only danger is that rocks may tumble down when a trekker slips or a monkey throws it. There is plenty of drinking water in the cisterns enroute, at least during the monsoon. The main cave at the top of Naneghat is used by trekkers for overnight halt and there are water cisterns near the cave providing potable water during rains.
