Ghiz Government Passes Bill Requiring University Courses To Teach Benefits Of HST

Following controversy over the Liberal government's announcement of the introduction of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), to be implemented on April 1 2013, Premier Ghiz has passed a bill requiring all university courses to teach the benefits of bringing HST to Prince Edward Island. “I don’t understand why there is such a hoopla about the new legislation. As a government we have been steadfast in our initiative to get the best education for students here on Prince Edward Island," affirmed a politician who shall remain nameless (but his father was also a Premier named Ghiz). "This is just another way that we’re doing it, but this time we’re making sure that students are learning about how the HST matters.” “HST is incredibly beneficial,” explained a government spokesperson. “It’s a very efficient system. Essentially, where we were previously taxing you for taxing you, we will now stop doing that.” The Harmonized Sales Tax combines the previous federal tax, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) with a 1% lower Provincial Sales Tax (PST). This works to effectively lower the taxation from 15.5% to 14%, though none of us really know why they did it that way in the first place. “The 1.5% drop will be great.” explained the spokesperson. “Shampoo will be cheaper. Um, and magazines. Provided you buy them at the store, because if you subscribe to them they’ll actually be 9% more expensive." "Sure, the cost of some minor things will be increased. You know, like electricity, or new homes, or heating your new home with anything that isn’t a world-killing fossil fuel. But you can’t focus on the negatives." The spokesperson went on to note several positives to the introduction of the new tax.

"Many menial purchases will drop by a menial percentage. And there will be some things that were previously taxed by the old system that won’t be taxed in the new system at all. Like baby diapers. Specifically ones made of cloth. Oh, crap. That’s pretty much it. That's actually the only thing that will be getting more than a 1.5% drop." "We are so, so sorry.” As the Liberal government thought that legislation requiring the benefits of HST to be taught in every university course at UPEI should be implemented immediately, none of it was actually well thought out. Now, each course will feature five minutes of listening to a pre-recorded cassette tape (1.5% cheaper under the new tax system). Students will then create short poems, using pencils and paper (now 9% more expensive under the new tax system) about the new HST system. Classes will be resumed as normal. Students who write poems of a contentious nature will be enrolled in a HST knowledge-ability program during which they will learn the error of their ways. “We’re currently ranked 13th for GDP per capita in Canada, so obviously it doesn’t make sense for the government to be giving us a tax break,” noted one student before being grabbed by men in dark suits and glasses. “How are we funding this new HST education legislation?” asked the unnamed Premier of Prince Edward Island. “Well we’re actually using some of the additional tax funds that we’ll be collecting when we implement HST.” UPEI loves you, Ghiz.
