Finished Mini Ghost! A game styled (and developed for?) the computers of yore, it's a cool little metroidvania, a little annoying on some aspects due to its limitations, but good nonetheless. It's also a prequel of shorts of Ghost 1.0, which I started all the way back in 2016!!! and never went back to it... Gotta get to it after all these years!!
Ok, before we start this totally original countdown let’s get something out of the way first.
Yeah, let’s just get this out of the way. It would be pretty obvious that Celeste would be number 1 so it gets it’s own special slot.
If you want to know why Celetse gets it’s own slot, well...
... Yeah.
After finishing Iconoclasts I felt kinda bad for all the criticisms I said. I still stand by everything I said but this game was still a passion project by one guy, and that’s an impressive feat.
So I’m putting it in the Top 5 for one reason and one reason only.
Robin is really cute.
Have you ever wanted to experience to old days of the NES but without all the frustration and bullshit?
Well you play this game, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon.
I beat this game a total of 5 times and not once did it get old. Even during the hardest run of solo Zangetsu with no upgrades I still had a blast.
Also I just realized that this game was never nominated for anything and that’s kinda sad.
This game was HUUUUGGGE surprises. I was not prepared for the funniest game in the world.
That fucking silly dancing thing. My sides are still in orbit.
And not only is the writing phenomenal, the gameplay too!
I know I know, I haven’t beaten this game yet, but I did beat the one on Wii...
Wait, I don’t think I even beat that one.
Huh. Well regardless It’s in the Number 2 spot.
I agonized a bit over whether to put this or Hollow Knight on the Top 5. I didn’t want to have two metroidvanias so I had to choose one. And I went with Ghost 1.0
Don’t get me wrong, Hollow Knight is fantastic, I love everything about that game and the amount of fun I had with Hollow Knight and Ghost 1.0 is pretty balanced. So why go with the latter?
Well, I think the writing of Ghost 1.0 edges it. It’s a really entertaining and well told story with likable charterers and moments that range from heartwarming to shocking.
Hollow Knight’s story meanwhile, is not traditionally told. It’s open-ended, you have to search game for characters and lore and piece them together to understand the entire picture and personally, I don’t really like that type of storytelling. It’s possible to miss certain things so you’ll never truly understand everything unless you look up the wiki. I like to be shown all the cool bits in the story rather than find them myself.
And that’s my Top 5 games. I didn’t put games like Billy Hatcher, Pikmin 3 and others like them because I played them before I made diaries of them. I felt it wouldn’t be fair to compare an old game I already love to a new game that has to impress me.
