- Shine Shine Monks -

Why are ‘Shine Shine Monks’ hanging in this place? Hm, it’s been wet for weeks. But this is a part of England where I rarely see Japanese people, especially in the local Community Network Centre in this small seaside town in Kent.

I have been wondered about this, in the last few days.

Finally, I have identified that they are the ghost dolls for Halloween!

A Teru Teru Bozu, literally "Shine Shine Monk" is a small traditional handmade doll made of white paper or cloth that Japanese farmers began hanging outside of their window by a string during Edo period. The famous nursery rhyme was made in 1920s based on Shine Shine Monk. Almost every citizen in Japan knows about him and may associate the ghost dolls as Teru Teru Bozu, when the rest of world could associate it’s Halloween.

何でこんなところに、てるてる坊主が飾ってあるのかと、ちょっと、不思議だった。然も、日本人を殆ど見かける事が無い、イギリス、ケント州の外れの、海岸沿いの小さな町の、地元コミュニティセンターの一角に、てるてる坊主などあり得ないけど、まあ、ここ何週間も雨続きだったせいかなと思った。

流石に、あれはハローウィンのお化け人形だったのだと納得した。

照る照る坊主（てるてるぼうず）は、江戸時代の中期に始まった日本の風習の一つである。翌日の晴天を願い、白い布や紙で作った人形を軒先に吊るすもので、「照る照る法師」、「照れ照れ坊主」、「日和坊主（ひよりぼうず）」など地域によって様々な呼称がある。また、大正時代に制作された同名の動揺がある。

me, on my first dnd session

group is in a haunted house blah blah

me (half orc paladin): while the rest of the group is being idiots, aka our halfling is a burnt corpse that we stripped in the fireplace and our dwarf is falling down the service lift with the human failing to pull her back up, i go up to the attic alone

me: walks into room

dm: there's a small doll dorectly across from you; strangely, you feel like it's watching you. The dusty but empty rocking chair starts to sway back and forth.

me:

everyone else (ooc): oh shit

me: nervously chuckling "hi, i got lost, um, looking for the bathroom"

dm: sighs, and tells me to roll for charisma

me: with bated breath, 20 crit win

dm: almost face palming, he says that the doll slowly lifts her arm and points behind me

me: "thanks, and uh bye" turns around, walks out and proceeds to make the entire party (ooc) scream as they can't believe i just did that

me: later, i go back to the room and god damn adopt that doll and pin it to the top hat my character picked up and despite the fact she keeps telling me to go towards life endangering situations i love her
