It’s occurred to him he’s lost.

It was meant to be a shortcut, cutting through the cemetery. Straight line between two points, shortest distance and all that. Unfortunately, each attempted line ended up a dead end, or a fence that seemed just a little too high to scale. So, he’d turned around, but turned out he’d turned around a bunch already, and now he had no fuckin’ clue where the right way to turn even was.

He skulked between the rows of graves now, looking for a familiar marker. The sun was going down, and while the morbidity of the setting didn’t bother him, the prospect of having to navigate this shit by the light of his cigarette did. 

He sighed and paused, looking around to get his bearings again with about as much luck as he had the last ten times. This time, however, something caught his eye. Some kind of movement- nothing he could make out in time, but he trusted his mind enough to know it was real at least. His gaze lingered in that spot and he took a long drag on his cigarette, waiting to see if whatever it was would move again.
