YET UNKNOWN: SHEKON
British architect and musician Jonathan Chan, who used to inhabit the skin of JUST THE ARCHITECT (listen HERE), a marvelous violin based project, is now dividing his time between doing strings for emerging London based band GHOSTS YOU ECHO, his own solo project SHEKON, and sometimes he still finds time to write soundtracks (HERE).
Jonathan is a master in making songs that grow inside you, hear one of my personal favorites below:

Another World : my interview with Hourglass Sea
Hourglass Sea is Dean, an electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist from Bradford. His music is beautifully nostalgic of the technologies of my generation, the plutonic worlds of the sega megadrive, the addictive sounds of the nintendo gameboy, but as well as also having an innovative edge to his production reminiscent of producers such as Timbaland and his work with the late 90's RnB singer Aaliyah.
Hourglass Sea will be main support on the Wicked Tongue launch Wednesday 15th feb. @ The Old Blue Last, doors open 8pm/FREE ENTRY
-So how did Hourglass Sea come about? when did the project start?
Hourglass Sea started more or less a year ago. It was around December 28th to January 1st, around that time.
I used to make hip hop style beats, largely sample based in the 90s BPM range. I did that for quite some time. Songs like Crystal Kross are quite reflective of my earlier influences, but I got bored of hip hop...and I've never just listened to hip hop exclusively either. I think I just wanted to evolve musically.
-Do you feel that you can connect to a music scene where you live? are there any other artists that you relate to in bradford?
Not really. Indie rock seems to be very popular locally. I don't think I can relate to the local scene as such. I've never been bothered too be honest.
-What are your main musical influences for Hourglass Sea?
Musically, the 80s and 90s plays a big part in my influences. The 80s alone was a very diverse era, especially for R&B and funk.
In the early part of the decade there was this emphasis on disco style grooves, with a little synth combined with slap bass and choppy guitar...by the mid 80s virtually every aspect of an R&B record was synthetic - apart from the guitar, and a little slower in tempo,. And it continuously sounded fresh and inspired.
So acts like S.O.S Band's Sands Of Time, Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel and Cameo's Word Up are a few of my highlights from that era.
-Your official promo for 'L.A lights' is one of my favourite videos, it has a really fun cowboy beebop feel to it, old anime style, who directed the video and how much say did you have in the story line & art direction?
I'm glad you like it. Saltaire's Jack King and his crew did an unbelievable job with that shoot. I'd decided back in March to have a video made for L.A Lights and through facebook I came across a video Jack had made, and shot locally for a band called To Kill A King. I loved it and figured it would be a good idea to make it my mission to contact Jack to get his views on L.A Lights. Fortunately he liked the song and we met in a pub in Bradford. He'd created a very surreal story line which sounded crazy. Secretly I wanted to somehow get Jack to feature Lidget Green (area in Bradford) in the video simply because I'm a sucker for nostalgia and I'd grown up in that area - although it does look quite cinematic in its own way, I suppose.
I gave Jack some info about a couple of sites within Lidget Green that he might be interested in for the shoot- so we headed off to Lidget Green and luckily he loved both sites, which were the quarry and a derelict mill site over the road from my old house. Things turned out really well. Far better than what I could have imagined for my first video.
-It's also really nice to see L.A. lights have a thought-provoking and fun video, other than stereotyping in to an ostentatious "typical RnB" one...which brings me to my next question, do you think that that culture stereotype still exists? that the majority of RnB videos and the notion of RnB is a bad influence (as perceived by the older generation)? personally what do you think can change it?
I wouldn't go as far as to judge and describe these videos as a 'bad influence', but they are a little boring and predictable. I think the blog/underground R&B scene is really exciting and promising, and as long as the music stays fresh - I'm sure the industry will eventually catch up and begin to start taking risks again and being a little more entrepreneurial...
-Back to the video, were you happy with the final edit and would you wanna do more videos like that for your future music releases?
Yeah, the final edit was perfect for me. Couldn't have asked for anything more. We wanted to present a surreal story whilst utilizing Bradford and Lidget Green's landscape. I'd really like to have more videos made, hopefully we'll fix something up for 2012...
-Artists like M83 started out doing interesting instrumental music such as yourself, then gradually brought in the vocals, him singing as well as other vocalists, is it something that you want to do with your own music eventually? bring in a vocalist?
I can't sing. Seriously. But I'd really like to collaborate with a vocalist at some point. At the beginning I actually started this project with the intention of finding a permanent singer, but that failed. Eventually I became comfortable with making instrumental music and I've never looked back. However in the long term I'd be open to some collaborations..
-Either way, with or without vocals, your music definitely holds itself, the production is unique and creates such ambience, would you agree that when you want to bring in a vocalist it would be an act of evolution for your music? so what is your creative process when you make music & the production decisions you make?
Thanks....I usually start with drums or some kind of groove. I fill everything out until I'm happy with the song without any kind of melodic input, then I start to think about what sounds I'll use. My aim is to create something really bright and inspired. Even if it's a little messy. I record in a clumsy, messy kind of way anyway, and I don't place too much emphasis on perfection, especially in regards to timing and bit rates. I prefer things to sound natural in that regard.
I remember reading an interview with Josh Homme, (Queens Of The Stone Age, Kyuss), a few years back, and he made the point that a recording should never be perfect - it should sound like Humans made it, not robots. I've never forgotten that.
-What are your main plans/goals for this year?
Hopefully to release as much music as possible - I've set myself a goal of about 6-8 songs per month, even if they're only rough mixes...I'd also like to continue playing live and to hopefully gain a little more exposure. That kinda thing really...
-And lastly, what is your favourite cat video on youtube at the moment? :D
Well, I'm looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises - and apparently Catwoman features. Does that count?!
well no that doesn't count, but i forgive you! haha
*thank you very much to Hourglass Sea for doing this interview, i cant wait to see him play live on feb 15th!! n_n
