This is Route 44, Rehoboth
Tales of haunted roads are pretty popular fare in New England, and our area is no exception. On Route 44 in Rehoboth, stories abound of a phantom red-headed hitchhiker. Accounts vary, but he’s most commonly spoken of as wearing plaid. Some people report seeing him in their cars, others claim to have seen him keeping pace with their vehicles, and still others have reported him as having glowing red eyes.
After traveling down the road aways in complete silence, the Hitchhiker will suddenly begin to giggle. Those giggles will soon turn into maniacal, uncontrollable laughter that pierces the ears of those in the vehicle. The driver, fed up with the Hitchhiker’s behavior, will threaten to pull over and force him out of the car if he doesn’t stop—and then, in an instant, the Rehoboth Redheaded Hitchhiker is gone. He simply disappears, even with the car moving at a pace of about 50 miles per hour.
