 AURIVOROUS,   THIS   LIGHT     between   worlds,   the   way   lucien   threads   the   needle   between   making   her   feel   safe,   and   making   her   feel   on   edge.   and   here’s   the   truth   :   she   is,   and   has   always   been   smarter   than   she   looks,   smarter   than   she   portrays   herself   as   being.   knows   very   well   how   he   swallows   gold   and   then   lets   it   drip   from   his   tongue,   her   mother   has   warned   her   of   wolves   wearing   sheepskin   as   a   mantle.   but.

 in   moments   like   these,   when   the   tower   is   quiet   and   @ghostslayed   strips   himself   of   the   outmost   layers   of   masks   and   personas,   he   reminds   her   of   endless   fields   of   dandelions,   yellow   teeth   bared   at   the   sun.         ❝     if   i   could   change   reality   ...     ❞         there’s   still   the   purr   of   a   cat   rumbling   in   her   chest,   tip   of   her   tail   flicking   back   and   forth,   the   picture   of   a   content   tiefling.         ❝     i   would   probably   make   it   so   that   everything   has   just   a   little   bit   of   glitter   in   it,   so   that   it   sparkles.     ❞

 IN   THE   FAIRYTALES,    A   KISS     is   always   enough   to   break   the   curse.   it’s   how   it   goes   :   someone   pisses   off   an   evil   witch,   bam,   you’re   cursed,   and   then   your   one   true   love   sweeps   in   and   saves   the   day.   and   maybe   a   part   of   her   wants   to   believe   it’s   true,   because   sometimes   lucien   smiles   at   her   and   her   breath   catches   in   her   lungs,   stomach   swarming   with   butterflies,   and   it   doesn’t   hurt.   tries   to   ignore   the   way   her   friends   look   at   her   whenever   she   joins   him,   like   they   know   something   she   doesn’t.

 but   how   can   he   be   pure   evil   when   he’s   so   gentle   with   her   ??   the   polymorph   spell   has   ended   and   they   lay   together   on   the   floor,   her   hand   clutching   at   his,   breathless   with   laughter.   in   her   dreams,   she   sees   the   city   made   of   flesh   and   a   crown   on   lucien’s   head,   though   it’s   stopped   terrifying   her,   and   maybe   that’s   where   the   true   danger   is.

 but   then   @ghostslayed​   turns   to   her   and   asks         ❝     can   i   kiss   you?     ❞         and   none   of   that   matters.   cheeks   flush   with   a   blush,   turning   on   her   side   as   well,   chest   still   heaving   a   little.   her   hand   finds   his   cheek,   thumb   delicate   as   it   runs   across   the   bone,   over   the   bridge   of   his   nose,   then   down   to   his   lips,   where   they   linger.   dangerous,   everything   about   him   is   dangerous,   but   he’s   so   beautiful   it   makes   her   heart   hurt.

 ❝     yeah.     ❞         too   simple   a   word   for   the   monumental   feeling   that   accompanies   it.   a   kiss.   her   first,   life   or   death   and   desperation   beneath   the   waves   notwithstanding.   she’ll   give   it   to   him,   and   maybe   he’ll   give   her   a   gift   in   return.   leans   closer,   hovers,   mouth   against   mouth.

 maybe   the   fairytales   are   all   wrong.   maybe   the   kiss   and   the   curse   are   both   the   same.

 her   hands   are   gentle   on   his   cheeks.   cradle   him   like   her   clay   forged   mortal   hands   can   contain   all   that   he   is,   all   that   he   plans   to   be.   and   before   you   sits   death,   sits   death,   sits   death.   in   her   mouth,   ashes   she   can't   swallow.         ❝     what   if   i   love   you,   though.   or   could   love   you.     ❞         conversational.   like   it's   not   a   big   deal,   touching   lucien   like   this,   when   all   her   skin   is   tingling   with   the   urge   to   recoil.   like   they're   talking   about   the   weather   and   not   about   her   spitting   out   her   heart   for   him   to   hold.   it   feels   like   a   betrayal   anyway.

 what   if   i   love   you.   would   that   be   enough,   or   are   you   as   hungry   as   that   city,   where   does   the   hunger   go   but   between   your   ribs,   in   the   hollow   of   your   bones,   did   you   know   i'm   hungry   too   ————   she   bites   her   tongue.   kneels   up   to   hover   above   him   in   the   snow,   to   look   him   in   the   eye.   foolishly,   childishly,   she   has   never   been   afraid.         ❝     what   if   you   didn’t   have   to   be   lonely   ??     ❞

 YOU   HAVE   THE   SAME   LAUGH,     she   wants   to   say   but   doesn’t,   not   when   their   safety   hangs   on   the   razor’s   edge,   no   matter   how   much   her   hands   itch   to   touch,   to   embrace,   to   beg   forgiveness   for   a   sin   he   won’t   remember   anyway.   wants   to   shake   him,   ask   :   you   died   trying   to   save   me,   does   that   mean   nothing   to   you,   i   didn’t   even   get   to   say   goodbye,   where   did   molly   go   if   not   inside   you   ??   eiselcross   is   cold   and   she   hates   everything   about   it.   hates   that   vess   derogna   is   dead   and   that   lucien-not-molly   has   new   friends   now,   and   they   can’t   trust   him,   and   he   doesn’t   trust   them.   she   swallows   all   that   back.   smiles,   in   their   little   secluded   corner   away   from   both   groups,   the   light   from   the   fire   casting   strange   shadows   over   his   face.   she   loves   him,   has   loved   him   from   the   very   beginning,   and   it’s   breaking   her   heart.         ❝     you   taught   me   a   lot,   you   know   ??   well,   not   you,   technically.   molly   did.   but   i   didn’t   get   to   say   thank   you   to   him,   so   maybe   i   should   say   it   to   you.     ❞

VETH WOULD’VE NEVER expected that they would be able to see Molly again ー not quite Molly, but a stranger in a companion’s body; the opposite of what she’d experienced ー a companion in a stranger’s body, someone not quite her, yet would be her all the same. How did she react when she became someone else? How should she react when he returned to someone not himself? 

She catches herself before his name falls onto her tongue ( so be it if this was not Molly in the flesh ー to be is what you make of it ), thick eyebrows knotted together, lips bitten in an effort to find the words to say. What do you say to a long-lost friend? What do you say to a stranger in his body?

the campfire is burning low in the pit after a few bottles’ worth of revelry, another one still being passed lazily between them. he taps his fingers against the neck of the mead bottle, the clink of silver against glass permeating the comfortable silence between them.

“ cheers to that, ” tiv says, his tone drier than the expensive champagne gustav had served them one memorable opening night. he takes a swig of the molasses-sweet mead before passing the bottle to the tiefling. icy blue eyes glint with amusement as he glances over at mollymauk with a quirked brow and the beginnings of a fond smile tugging his lips. “ i never took you for such a romantic. ”
