The seedheads of Cardiocrinum giganteum (giant Himalayan lily, giant lily) provide a great feature after the fragrant, trumpet-shaped white flowers. This plant is a monocarpic bulb which may take up to 7 years to flower from seed or 4-5 years from offset bulbs.

With a height of up to 3.5m, the Giant Himalayan Lily (Cardiocrinum giganteum) is the largest lily of all, also the only lily with webbed leaf veins. They like cool moist mountains, in Australia, they can happily grow in places where temperate rainforests occur.

These are giant water lilies called “Queen Victoria”. They can hold up to 100 pounds at their center! They grow in shallow water in tropical South America including backwaters of the Amazon River. Here’s another picture:

Giant Himalayan Lily / Cardiocrinum giganteum The largest of all the lilies, the giant Himalayan lily can grow up to 3.5m tall! About half an hour inland from us is Mt Peel Station - the largest naturalised area of them in New Zealand. The current owners are descendants of the settlers who founded the station in 1855 and every year they have an open day to show off the amazing forest of human-sized lilies. It was at one of these open days some ten years ago that my mummy first fell in love with them and decided she had to have them in her garden. Because they take at least seven years for seed-grown bulbs to flower, we all got terribly excited this spring when they started sending up flowering stalks for the first time. And so, just before Christmas this amazing flowering happened! These were the very first of the flowers that opened and they were certainly taller than me (though at 5′2″ that’s not saying much). I’m going to be keeping an eye on them for when the seeds develop, and maybe in seven years time I can have my own giant lilies!
