19. Fashion

“It’s time for tea!” The shrill human voice grated on Listelle’s ears. 

The child pinched Listelle between its grubby fingers and the borrower’s breath caught in her chest. She struggled against the human’s hold. 

“Stop it.” The human forced cloth over her head. Listelle’s voice clogged in her throat. This would be where she would die. This was the end. 

“You’re all dressed up for the tea party!” The human giggled. Listelle looked down. Indeed the human child had dressed her in a lacy doll’s dress. “We’re going to be friends forever and ever!”

Fear coursed through her.

Forever and ever.

The only thing I could think of for Fashion was Polly Pockets, to be honest. So, here’s a human child thinking a borrower is a Polly Pocket. Yikes.

Scary

20. Scary

He cowered in the shadows as the giant ripped trees from the ground by their roots. It was the beast from his nightmares. 

It bellowed, shaking the town like an earthquake. Villagers screamed and ran - mothers ran to their children and fathers ran for their pitchforks. They had taken his warning seriously. 

He had seen the giant’s house at the base of the mountain while out hunting. He had run, screaming, that they were going to be attacked by a beast - with fangs and an appetite for humans. 

“Help! Someone help me!” A roar. “Help me! I have a sliver!”

I was going to make this one really intense, but then I had 12 words left and couldn’t think of a good way to end it. So hey! Have fun!

Treat

17. Treat

Entry 17: Food

He got his appetite back. The creature seems to like sweet foods. Today the creature ate a blueberry and a bit of a powdered doughnut left in his cage. He still does not eat in front of me, but at least he’s eating. Was worried that he would waste away in the place he is contained. 

It still will not speak though. Perhaps with a bit of prodding and a few more sweets, I can get it to say something. Further testing to come.

Tomorrow I will test chocolate - Hershey’s, milk - and a caramel candy, Wurther’s brand.

Morning

21. Morning

The giant tried to tiptoe as he crept down the mountain side. He could see the purple on the horizon, breaking the navy of night. If he hurried, he would not be seen. If he hurried, he could see it before his mother started to worry. 

Halfway down the mountain, he picked a tree that would hold his weight and climbed it. Purple turned to fire and the giant gasped as the sky painted with colors he had never seen. 

Red and pink and orange and yellow. 

His mother’s disapproval would be worth the utter beauty. 

Humans called it Sunrise.

I love this drabble so much. I’m sure it’s been done before by someone else, but I still had to write it when I saw this prompt. I love the thought of experiencing a sunrise for the first time.

Trick

13. Trick

Azalea whistled and a flurry of blue and green zipped up to hover in front of her face. Goose, her pet hummingbird, chirped and she smiled. Grabbing his reins, she hoisted herself up into the saddle. Another whistle and they were off, zooming through the forest. 

Ahead lay a branch. Azalea whistled a clipped note. With a chirp, Goose sped over the branch before diving beneath it. The result was a quick, stomach-dropping loop and Azalea shrieked with delight. 

Sensing his master’s happiness, Goose looped another oncoming branch. 

Another, another - until Azalea’s pealing laughter could be heard throughout the forest.

Climb

14. Climb

The giant’s roar shook the mountain-side and Kasey clung to the sharp rocks in fear. It was close. She could hear its footfalls thunder through the forest beneath her -

But she was only halfway up the cliff. 

I’m not going to make it. The flash of intuition seared through her mind and froze in her veins. Adrenaline spiked, Kasey’s hand reached for the next handhold. If she could make it to the top of the cliff, she would be safe.  

A few more feet. Could she make it?

Another roar had her climbing faster -

Until her fingers touched flat earth.

Jar

8. Jar

The offending item sat under the underbrush, mocking them. The Outies had all crept up quietly to look at it, to gauge its danger.

A fairy-trapper, the child-human had crowed as she set it in its place. A fairy-trapper for the garden fairies.

None of the Backyard’s Inhabitants liked the sound of it.

It glistened harshly in the sunlight and the sparse collection of  twigs and grass-clippings lay wilting inside.

When evening fell, the child-human returned, face fallen in disappointment. No faires, she cried.

They don’t like being caught. The mother-human consoled, taking the child back inside.

The Backyard sighed.

Who else made fairy houses and fairy traps when they were younger? I certainly did. I guess my younger self loved the idea of tiny things and my older self had to catch up!
