#gif problem

hey this is so stupid but you're a content creator & i've just made my second gifset of all time and the gifs aren't moving when i upload them? they move just fine when it's in drafts or a saved post, but not on the actual dash, and i was wondering if you knew how to fix that?

Don’t worry, it’s not a stupid question! People get this all the time (including me) and I don’t know how much this will help but these are some of the things I tried and they worked:

Check your gif file size. Make sure it doesn’t exceed the limit.

Is it on mobile or desktop? Because gifs on mobile won’t play until you tap them. Or they tend to freeze up when the file size is too heavy. Try opening it from a desktop or laptop.

Check your browser or computer. Loading images uses up RAM (or something like that) and if you open a load of tabs, especially if they’re gifs/videos, it can slow down your computer that will slow down your browser that will slow down or stop gifs.

Could be browser issues. Try logging out and logging in before uploading again. Or clear cache and cookies on your browser before logging in.

If you have XKit, make sure that you don’t have the disable gifs extension installed or turned on.

But if you tried all the points above and it still wouldn’t work, then I suggest you contact support because Tumblr be like dat sometimes.

is anyone else having problems with gifs in messenger? I’m on desktop as always, and since yesterday certain gifs are glitching - they’re okay if I click through to the original post but in the search function and the messages themselves they show the background through the gif.

Okay so all my gifs aren’t working. They aren’t even showing, all my posts with gifs aren't even showing, it’s just white, my background. It’s not that they aren't moving, but the fact they aren’t even showing, wth?

You’re welcome! I hope so too but at this point I don’t know what to expect. I check sometimes to gather people’s experiences in case the Staff answers me back (they never did since I published that post) and it seems some people have reported the problem as well and received the exact same answer I did (word by word), so they have enough complaints of the same issue to do something but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. It surprises me, though, that if a handful of people reported the problem already, we still all got the same immediate response of “it’s you, we can see them fine”, but that’s tumblr for you, I guess. The post got quite a surprising amount of people saying they had the same problem and they thought it was just them (and a minor portion of users going “no offense but this is obvious” which ok) so if I don’t get an answer in a couple more weeks at most, I’ll message again and show them the post’s responses with people having the same issue. I remember something similar happened last year with images, servers in some locations didn’t load them, back then I fixed it using Hola until tumblr got it together and fixed it, but this time that solution doesn’t work.

I’m reading every reply and comment to my post about the gifs not moving and saving the experiences shared there for whenever the Staff gets back to me (or if I end up contacting them again myself). It’s good to have more back-up from users and to see this is a widespread issue and to let people know it’s not their fault/their gifs/their internet connection/etc.

i've definitely been seeing a lot more randomly broken gifs lately :c

It’s been going on for at least a month, if not longer. I couldn’t find anyone’s experience or anything around here and I didn’t know for sure for a while if it wasn’t just me. I’ve been experimenting and downloading back gifs I’ve made, the one which doesn’t move and another one which does from the same gifset, I can open the one that moves just fine and the frames are visible in ps, the broken one is locked and has one frame only. The size is also different from the exact same gif I do have saved in my computer and when I replace it with the exact same one I originally uploaded, it moves just fine without changing anything about it. It’s definitely something tumblr is doing. I think the best I can do is hope to find a gifset of mine with that problem which I still have saved in my computer and mail support providing the link of the gifset and the original file of the gif as it was uploaded. I’ll see if I can find one.  Edit: I found one and sent a message to support, we’ll see what happens.

I was doing a bit of Googling when I came across your blog and your posts about your 540 px gifs not working. I'm having the same issue. I posted a couple two days ago and they came out fine. As of yesterday, they're not working again. No idea what's going on, but I hope Tumblr fixes it soon, because this isn't happening on our end. Good luck!

ok so im not the only one! i thought it was just a problem with my blog, i actually sent them a mail 2 days ago and they responded my mail 3 hours ago saying their engineers are investigating the problem and he said that “Depending on the severity of the root cause, a fix might take longer than expected” and that we should be patient while they look into it. So i guess now we just have to wait!

UPDATE: i guess it didn’t take them long!? i just tried uploading a gif to my drafts, just to see if they were blurry and they look fine!, i dont know if that’s the same with you, but they’re definitely working on it!

UPDATE 2: They just sent me another mail telling me they solved the issue, so your gifs should be working too!
