Giving presents and wrapping them does not have to be expensive. Utilizing old maps, yellow or white pages won’t cost you a dime! Most importantly, you can help mother earth through upcycling! Not to mention the fact that you really exert effort in making and wrapping your gift which is extra special. Now, that’s hitting two (or should I say, three?) birds with one stone.
Just to give you a background concerning upcycling...
Based on Cambridge Dictionary, it means “the activity of making new furniture, objects, etc. out of old or used things or waste material”
Here are the materials you will need:
Note: All of these materials are used already. The special paper I used are scraps from my cousin’s project. I just kept them.
After wrapping the gift using the old map, you can wrap it again with the special paper and then tie it with a ribbon!
What a cute bow!
Tip: If you are giving the gift to someone who loves to travel overseas, you may use your old world map. In fact, I used the map of Vietnam in this sample since I am giving this to my friend who loves to visit the said country. I believe that would be more special.
Another tip: You can also write your tags/message using recycled/scratch paper. I used an old calendar for the tag and I punched a hole at the top.
With the second gift, I used an old white page and an old ribbon.
Final Thoughts
I thought of this simple project because let’s admit it. When we give presents, the gift wrappers are just another expense but the recipients will most likely tear them. These will turn into wastes which are detrimental to earth. You can lessen the carbon footprint by upcycling these old materials and by turning them to cute and heartwarming gifts. Plus, you can learn a new skill and have more bonding times with your family and friends! I hope that you can try this activity. If you do, please reply in this post or share your work! I would love to see them!
