I feel like this question is going to be out of left field, but Google is especially useless to me now (doubly so with RDJ!Doom)... But do you know why Tony has a small crush on Doom? I keep seeing it referenced here and there in comics. Is it just a writer bit? Is it an actual thing? Is it the face or the intelligence or both?
So Doom and Tony have had a hero-villain rivalry thing going on since Doomquest (IM #149-150), from 1981, when they both accidentally visited Camelot together, and it was great:
I wouldn't say they're each other's biggest enemies; I think Doom's extremely complicated thing with Reed Richards is absolutely his number one rivalry. But since Doomquest, they have often gone up against each other, probably partly because Tony doesn't have a lot of other villains who are at the I Want To Take Over The World threat level, other than, like, the Mandarin, and there are… uh… let's just say, a lot of problematic stories featuring the Mandarin. (There are also some good ones! Haunted is one of my favorite Iron Man arcs ever. But the bad ones are very bad.)
The thing about Tony having a crush on Doom is (almost) entirely Bendis' fault. Doom, famously, wears a mask to hide the scars he tragically received when he was in college, while trying to build a machine that would help him rescue his mother from Hell. (Comics are just like this.) But his machine was flawed and he didn't heed Reed's warnings and it exploded and also then he got expelled from college, meaning he is not in fact actually in possession of a doctorate, although you probably don't want to point that out to him.
At the end of the Secret Wars event in 2015, Reed healed Doom's face, and that meant that Doom went around maskless for a while, because who even knows why he does what he does. Did. He's dead right now. Probably. Uh. Spoilers for One World Under Doom, which just ended. He's dead now. At least, it sure looked like he died. Wanda is (going to be) Sorcerer Supreme, and Doom has made Reed the executor of his will, because that's the kind of guy Doom is.
Anyway, back while Doom was maskless, he generally got drawn as being a fairly handsome man, and this was back when Bendis was writing Iron Man, and for some reason Bendis decided that Tony was just not going to shut up about how Doom was handsome now. Seriously. It comes up a lot. Tony still clearly doesn't like Doom as a person at all, even in this run. He is obviously not happy being around him. Representative example from Invincible Iron Man #6:
This is not a guy whose company Tony enjoys at all. But, hey, Tony does seem to think he's hot. Or was hot. So there's that.
There was also this extremely… interesting… part of Legacy of Doom in which Doom penetrated Tony with Excalibur, so it's not like they've never had weird homoeroticism in their relationship before.
But the Bendis IM run is, as far as I am aware, the only time Tony has actually thought of Doom in a way that expressed any kind of interest. If I had to guess, I would say Bendis just thinks it's funny, because he also decided that in New Avengers: Illuminati #4 (a long time before his IM run) that the rest of the Illuminati (okay, fine, Namor, it's Namor) should make fun of Tony for sleeping with Madame Masque, after Tony says she wears a mask like Doom:
I mean, I don't think this is particularly funny; it's definitely not one of the better scenes Bendis has ever written.
But, anyway, Bendis clearly enjoys implying Tony has some kind of thing for Doom, or having other characters imply it, or whatnot. He doesn't seem to be depicting any kind of situation that I would say is at the level of an actual crush. It was just that there was a period of time when for some reason he thought it would be great if Tony called Doom "handsome" a lot.
I am no arachnologist, but I am almost certain Lila is a western spotted orb weaver (as were most if not all of her fallen brethren).
gigacat replied to your post Me, vibrating violently as i try not to turn...
Are you writing this? Because oh god, I’m dying over this AU and I need so much more of it I’m weeping over Steve and his supreme thorst over Tony
Yeeeeeah it looks like I made another au god damn it
How 'bout a Sam to go with that Bucky? 8D ♥
Sam is probably coming soon! Unfortunately he might have to wait until my convention season is over but I really want to make a tattooed Sam!
gigacat replied to your photoset “A dark fairytale about a far too curious boy, who had no idea what...”
I would legitimately love this on my wall
I sell prints, just btw ;D. If you’re interested, write a message~.
@gigacat The job is good! I'll be in the training phase for another 3 weeks, but I really like it. It's definitely going to be challenging, but in a good way. It's a really chill environment and very comfortable culture-wise, much more so than my last job. As for the apt, we found a place. :D We're just kinda waiting on final approval now. But we should be moving in November. Soooo gotta start going through our current mess of an apartment lol. I am dreading that whole process but really excited about the move! All in all other than being super tired because I keep staying up way too late, things are really good~
(1) Okay, I wasn't going to add to the volume of your inbox, but I'm real curious now. Misha said we shouldn't worry so much about Cas's death so much as we should wonder how it's going to affect Cas. So I mean.... My first thought was human Cas. Then to it being a deciding factor on HOW Cas is brought back - if it's Jack's doing (and if they're indeed going evil with Jack), maybe it's a form of brainwashing again.
(2) But then I thought - because Misha ALSO mentioned the alternate universe(s?). What if they go really wild with this and it's a matter of Cas's personalities getting scattered across different universes, or he's missing facets of himself, and it's up to the guys to piece him back together as they go through the various universes? Or is that way too wild? LOL, I don't know anymore. I'm not worried about Cas being perma-deathed anymore at least.
I kinda wrote a super-duper-long reply that kinda covers this... and I personally don’t see how they can’t go with Jack as at least a grey-area Big Bad... not in the Evol Villain sense of the word, but just the fact that having a sort of “faith” in a vision of “paradise on Earth” has been the goal of every apocalypse the angels have tried to start. It’s not so much that they want to destroy the world, but it’s the antithesis of everything Sam and Dean have always fought for. Freedom is more important to them than peace.
(also, I’m pretty sure I have read several different fics that sound like your theories there... try The Mirror by Cloudyjenn for the whole multiverse thing, but there’s another fic that I CAN’T REMEMBER THE NAME OF but I think it was Gabriel’s grace that shattered after 5.19, and they had to chase down all the pieces to stop the apocalypse? So yeah, that definitely sounds like a fanfic)
Unfortunately, you can’t have absolute freedom or absolute peace. There’s always a compromise. Any time people are free to make their own choices, there’s gonna be a sacrifice of peace. To have perfect peace, the only way to achieve it is for EVERYONE to surrender their freedom.
The real world is a little bit messy. It’s shades of grey. Sometimes when things get ugly, people are willing to sacrifice some of their freedom in the hope of attaining a more peaceful situation, but we can never have that sort of paradise the nephilim is promising (just like the apocalypse promised) unless we completely surrender our free will. Because any time you get two people in the same room, they’re gonna have different ideas about what peace means for them, you know? In order for all 7+ billion of us humans to live perfectly peacefully, without any conflict at all, there’s gonna be a level of Stepford to every last person on the planet, and that’s just freaking wrong from a human perspective.
So even if Jack’s intentions are noble, wanting to create this paradise on Earth, it’s just not possible without erasing that fundamental spark that makes us all human to begin with. And that’s HORRIFYING.
That’s gonna be the HORROR aspect of s13.
I keep thinking of Dean’s quote to Cas in 4.22 that inspired Cas’s first full rebellion from Heaven:
Dean: You can take your peace... and shove it up your lily-white ass. 'Cause I'll take the pain and the guilt. I'll even take Sam as is. It's a lot better than being some Stepford bitch in paradise. This is simple, Cas! No more crap about being a good soldier. There is a right and there is a wrong here, and you know it.
Because again, that’s what Jack is offering. That’s the “future” he showed Cas in 12.19. It’s in direct conflict to everything he rebelled against Heaven for. Against everything he’s sacrificed himself for MULTIPLE TIMES over the years. He said it over and over in 12.19, that he’s not on Heaven’s side here. He’s on the Winchester side, and the side of Humanity.
Castiel: No, it isn't. I used to believe in a plan. I used to believe that I had some mission. But I have been through enough now to know that everyone is just winging it. Some of us quite badly. Lucifer... he's just breaking toys. He's sowing destruction and chaos, and there is no grand purpose at work. And there's no special role for you. When Lucifer took over Rooney's body... I'm sorry. You were just there.
Yet it only takes ONE TOUCH of the nephilim’s power, and suddenly Cas is ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED that freedom is no longer important? That peace and paradise is the true objective?
Yeah, that’s not OUR Cas talking anymore. Not entirely.
