One genuinely interesting thing the writers did for this show was using the recurring theme of reincarnation to add a bit of ongoing intrigue to the bigger picture. Starting in season 3, possibly as a way to lampshade the continued appearance of the same actors playing different characters across multiple planets and universes, the crew would sometimes call it out in a way that at first seemed like just garden variety fourth-wall breaking, but the reincarnation angle made it far more interesting. Characters would comment things like “Oh shit, that’s Giggerota! Why is she here, I thought she died?!” and she would reply “...Giggerota? That’s not my name...and yet...it sounds familiar?” and then she would seem to have a brief moment of deja vu, as if realizing she didn’t remember much of her old life before becoming the new “character” she is now, then simply chalking it up to being out of her mind.
It’s not the first time I’ve ever seen a show break the fourth wall like this, but it is the first one I’ve seen do it using the reincarnation angle, and I thought that was pretty cool!
