Her tone didn't match her words. Her words said she didn't need protection. Her tone said she didn't deserve to have it. He sighed, closing his eyes for a short moment. He didn't understand her sometimes. He didn't understand her cynicism at times. Why was she like this? What had happened to her? He stepped up to her, gently grabbing her arms. He looked down at her.
"I'm going to do it anyway. Lila, you protect people all the time. It's what you do. But who's protecting you? You deserve to have someone keep you safe, too. So, I'm going to protect you," he told her.

Dear Lila,
If you’re reading this, I’m already gone. Sorry I didn’t say good-bye. Tell everyone not to hold it against me. I didn’t really have the time. It’s nothing you guys did. It’s something that I need to do for myself. You always said that I could be a hero. That I had the potential. I just had to be ready to take the opportunity. Well, I’m ready. It’s my turn to be the hero. When you tell my mother, please try to smooth things over. Tell her not to be upset. Tell her something arose and I couldn’t stand by and watch it pass by. I needed to act, not observe. It was my turn to save the day.
Tell her and my father that I love them and that their lessons will help me endure. Tell Annie to keep out of trouble and off radar. Tell Rii that I love her and this isn’t me abandoning her. This is me making a sacrifice for her. Tell Cooper to watch out for everyone for me, that he is the good I wish I could have been. And as for you, Lila, thank you. Thank you for seeing something in me that only my mother saw. Thank you for showing me that I could do good. Thank you for giving me a chance. I’m sorry I couldn’t give you everything you hoped for, but know you are in my heart.
