Ah yes. Gary in Kalos. What a journey it would be.

Gary would still basically be on his own journey doing his own research thing probably with Professor Sycamore but occasionally run into Ash and the others and also because he was tasked by Delia to keep an eye on her stupid son who jumped off a tower on live television (yes Gary also saw that broadcast).

Sure, Gary has matured a lot after becoming a researcher but he's still the same smug ass kid that can and will piss off people for fun. Especially Ash.

Gary would also be the type to call out Ash on his bullshit point blank. Without shame. In front of trainers that admire Ash. Because Gary too was a trainer and wants the best for Ash. And he wants to ruin Ash's reputation a bit too.

Thus:

Gary upon seeing Greninja not forget Cut: Satoshi, for the love of Arceus, give your ninja frog Night Slash.

Gary: Why is your ace out here trimming out bushes mid-battle. Make him learn a fucking Dark Type move.

Shigeru and Satoshi are Gary and Ash's Kantonese names while the Gary and Ash being public names with Gary and Ash derived from their given name like Gary from ShiGERU and Satoshi from SAtosHi. And yes they named each other that when they were kids and they always joke that they named each other.

Its also why I made the jacket short because Shigeru "Gary" Oak is a tall 17 year old compared to the 14 year old that wore that jacket :)

Gary also has blue-green eyes as a nod to the fact that his name is interchanged with Blue or Green.

I like to think Pokespe!Green (M) would be more hands on with discipline while Blue (M) is the more chill older brother.

I like to think that Gary's upbringing as an Oak affected the way he interact with people.

Not just in the "oh people don't wanna talk to me because I'm an Oak" but in the way where people go "dude why is this child talking like this".

Like he doesn't talk like a child when he was like 5 and it makes kids not understand him and creep out several normal adults.

And its not because Gary is smart or he has the intelligence of an adult but Gary just copies the way other people speak and unfortunately its Professor Oak, who also has a shit ton of colleagues that go to his house that Gary becomes the waiter for, so Gary sometimes ends up talking like an encyclopedia or a politician without understanding ANY of it.

I also like the thought of Gary knowing basic political etiquettes since I did make Professor Oak the previous Champion, alongside being the most well known Professor in the world (might call the professors you meet in game as Regional Professors kinda like Regional Champions) and Green was a gym leader.

Also you cannot convince me that Professors and Researchers are not essential in politics. They need to be intertwined at LEAST. Like you cannot make a policy without the approval of the Regional Professors first.

Another additional to Gary's upbringing being affected by his political environment ergo Professor Oak and Green and Daisy and stuff.

Gary wears a shit ton of masks. Like you can barely tell if he's acting or he's being genuine.

One of the lessons he's learned from a very young age that he should not ever promise something he's not sure he can deliver.

Like he wouldn't speak in absolutes in public even when he thinks he can do it just in case someone hears it and those words bite him in the ass later. Like rather than saying "I'll be the Viridian City Gym Leader!" He'd say in public that he'll try his best. Even if he thinks he's the best candidate.

(Yes he's still arrogant lmao. When he was that 10 year old braggart with a red convertible anyways.)

And he puts up this professional act in front of the public and even during league battles.

His Dark Rival Persona™ is also a mask but a more playful one where he can poke fun at people where they know he's definitely putting up an act like a performative theatre kid who's waaaay too committed to the anti-hero bit like "It's good to see there's some potential." And Ash is like "shut the fuck up you told me my strategy was solid 2 weeks ago."

Its his way of interacting with others without the "must keep the Oak name respectable." while still keeping his heart locked in a cage in his chest.

Not the most healthy of coping strategies but its something that he's grown up with and has gotten used to.

Though I will say, back then Gary would not let people peel that mask.

I gotta show more of the Dark Rival Persona in the comics my god. I want to save the juicy stuff for Arc 3 but I really need to establish it early. Hopefully the first few comics showed it well for now lmao.

I just realized that every full body drawing I made for Gary the color of the boots changes.

Uh. He has a lot of boots now. For caves. And research. Totally not because I keep forgetting what the boots are supposed to the colored. Totally not.

This is gonna be like his Pokedex. He changes it from Kalos Dex to Kanto Dex at the drop of a hat.

Oak Siblings Facts :DD

ft. Eldest Sister Daisy, Middle Child Green, Baby Brother Gary

Part 2

Green's name was supposed to be Midori. Baby Green did not approve and basically forced everyone to use the name Green as he ignored anyone that didn't use “Green.” As a baby.

Gary and Daisy's actual names are Shigeru and Nanami. They call each other Ruru, from shigeRU, and Mimi, from nanaMI, in private.

Daisy's favorite song is Daisy Bell because that's the first song Bill made a computer play ever. Bill ‘forces’ Gary to play it on the piano on Bill and Daisy's dates at least once since Gary insists in being the one to set the mood during their dates.

Gary did in fact play Daisy Bell on Bill and Daisy's wedding.

Gary and Daisy talk about fashion together. Daisy is both jealous at the fact that Gary can pull of the noir look better than her (His Blue Disguise with Gare). But she is also pissed that Gary always chooses to dress like a lost archaeologist.

Green is the shortest of the three siblings. Gary is the tallest. Green does not like that.

Green has put rocks on Gary's pockets and bags because of this fact just to delay the inevitable like what Gumball did to Anais. Green was unsuccessful.

Daisy is so fucking pissed her baby brothers both have spiky ass hair she can't style those dammit no matter how much she brushes.

Gary has a Charmander Plush that Green gave him when Green was about to go to Johto to train with Chuck because Gary couldn't stop crying at the thought of Green leaving. He still has that plush to this day.

Daisy is a doctor. Sorry Brock, she is happily married to the weird computer nerd.

Besides Ash did Gary have any friends before his travels (or even after for that matter)

Before his travels, Gary had friends that were just acquaintances. Like they only talked to him because he was an Oak.

In his travels, he was somewhat acquainted with his cheerleaders though that was mostly a ploy to get back at Professor Oak which they willingly helped him with since he did drive those people to where they needed to go. It wasn't anything malicious so to speak and nothing ever happened but let's just say Professor Oak was way too protective that Gary needed to find a way to get him to back off.

His solution was embarrassment hence the cheerleaders.

He also has a few college friends by the time he's in Kalos. They don't know much about Gary's personal life but they do give Gary vegan recipes to try. They mostly focus on school stuff as they are suffering together with the shifted curriculum of the research world. It is Hell.

Though Gary is mostly around mentor figures lmao. Like Bill, Chuck, Blaine sort of, and the professors.

You said Gare can’t unddedtsnd pokespeak well, to what degree? Is it just human language comes easier or is he effectively deaf talking to other Pokemon?

Ooooh that's a fun question.

Gare isn't deaf but pokespeak comes off as gibberish to them and they basically hear that its just pokemon's names. So to them, its just pokemon making sounds rather than words that communicate something.

So Gare relies on reading body language, which makes their transform ability more convincing as they learn to move like that pokemon/person, or Porygon straight up just uses texts and emotes to communicate with Gare and to translate for them.

Gare learned the human language more because Gare was more exposed to humans than pokemon.

It's like Meowth learning to speak with the caveat being no longer being able to learn a new move. For Gare, they learned to understand human language with the caveat being no longer being able to understand pokespeak, to be able to blend in.

Since Gare can't speak though, they use their transformations and facial expressions to communicate to Gary and Gary's team, which they learn to decipher and understand.

Also you know how there's like little emotes that pop up in the older pokemon games like:

This is basically how Gare the Ditto communicates. This is what Porygon quite literally projects as emotes.
