Indian Head & Mount Colvin (4/46)
On Monday September 22, 2025, Joyce and i went for a long hike to Indian Head, the Insta capital of the high peaks region, and our 4th High Peak, Mount Colvin, the 39th highest peak in NY state and one of the tiniest summits I've ever seen. We had to park at the AMR parking lot, for which I had made reservations 2 weeks prior. The lot was fine and had two port o johns that were truly disgusting. From there, we walked like 1 mile on a literal gravel road, through a golf course, and then on another dirt road for two more miles. The hike to Indian Head was not bad at all. I was feeling just, like, not great. Not terrible but also not great, which is a shame because we probably could have added on Mount Blake, but I just wasn't feeling it, and 6 full miles of this hike were the stupid road in and out of the mountain.
Overall, it was a really beautiful day and I made us some phenomenal egg and cheese sandos on jalapeno cheddar bagels with a cream cheese and maple butter schmear. They were very good. On the way back down, we found a really beautiful trail that ran parallel to the Ausable River, which made us wonder why All Trails suggested the road rather than the scenic trail with soft pine needles to cradle your sore feet. We kept hoping to see some bears drinking from the river, but alas we only saw deer and lots and lots of turkeys.
It was an excellent day for hiking. We came home, took some hot showers and ate chili I had brought along from home with fritos for dipping! And planned our day 2, which we knew was going to be in the rain....
