Locasta the Good Witch of the North

"Sala-gadoola-menchicka-boo-la bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!"

Oh, wrong movie. But this was the song I listened to when designing my Good Witch of the North, aka Locasta if we go by Baum's 1902 play.

Now the Good Witch of the North has often been erroneously attributed to Glinda thanks to the MGM movie and it's not helped by Wicked making Galinda hailing from the north. But in actuality, the Good Witch of the North is a separate character from Glinda, and is described to be a short, old kindly woman, with illustrations depicting her with purple eyes, white dress, and a golden magical wand with an N to signify her as the ruler of the North, Gillikin Country.

Now, it would be simple to just be super faithful to the original illustration, but I wanted to give my own spin on the interpretation and what Locasta came across to me. I used the original illustration as the basis, and began searching for other characters that fit her archetype. This included the Fairy Godmother from Disney's Cinderella, the Three Fairies from Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Mama Odie from Disney's The Princess and the Frog, Impa from The Legend of Zelda, Mrs. Claus from Rankin Bass holiday specials, and Miss One from The Wiz. Miss One in particular was a major influence to the final design because The Wiz was one of the few Oz-related works that remembered that there are two good witches and not just one (that and I happened to like Thelma Carpenter's performance as Miss One).

For colors, I initially used Tip's outfit as a basis for Locasta's outfit color scheme since both of them hail from the purple Gillikin Country. However, the intense purple didn't work for me. It looked good for a mayor, but this wasn't the aura I got from Locasta. Her outfit in the books was shiny white and gives a fairy-like aura. So I masked the original color scheme with a white coating and then switch the lighting to Luminosity on Procreate.

I made dresses inspired by Oz

I’ve been feeling super depressed so I decided to draw some dresses inspired by my favorite book series.

I (kind of) put some thought into these.

The Emerald City dress is actually based more on Ozma than the actual City. I know she wears a white robe and that the Emerald City isn’t actually…emerald- for the most part. But I did decide to add some green in anyway. The biggest element in the dress is the poppy aspect, with one large poppy as a chest piece and two poppy petals to serve as the sash.

I based the Winkie Country dress around the fact that the Winkies are known to be inventors. I imagine they need a loose, flowy kind of dress to move about freely and tinker.

The Munchkin dress is (extremely) loosely based on Pilgrim dresses since the way the men are described as dressing reminds me of that.

There’s not that much to go of for the Gillikins honestly so I just looked up 1910s fashion and everything seemed to have these giant loose coats that look a bit too big and these loose skirts and I wanted to capture that. I exaggerated it a bit lol.

The Quadlings actually gave me the most trouble but I eventually settled on using the fact that China Town is located there as inspiration to look at some real world Chinese dresses during that time period for inspiration.

Do you have siblings and what are their names? one elder sister (from my immediate family) and her name is Tanja/Tatjana, and then 2 little sisters from my aunt(?) on my mothers side and their names are Sandra and Tea and then one little brother from another aunt(???) from my mothers side and his name’s Danilo

12. What school/college do you go to? how does one answer this question without giving away the school’s name

13. What kind of a student are you? mostly 5′s and 4′s (A’s and B’s) sometimes i throw a 3 in there (C) for variety’s sake you know haha h a

14. Do you even like school? not really no

15. What are your favourite school subjects? i think P.E overall is my favourite (strange being a tumblr user and not active at all) and maybe social studies cause we do fuck all every time

What are your favourite TV shows? hmhmm m Castle (even though it’s ended now), Sherlock, TBBT, i think The Fosters even though i haven’t actually watched an episode (we don’t have ABC here) then umm hetalia counts yeah? it’s an anime so. then you’ve got Scrubs and HIMYM (ended as well both of them) and uh yeah

21. What is your dream job? i think i’d love being a photographer or paid translator but i know neither of those are realistic probably. oh also full time youtube sounds pretty cool but there/s a 0.002% chance that’ll ever happen

22. Would you like to get married one day and where? yeah sure but idk. wherever it’s legal hah h a no but really idk i suppose anywhere’s good as long as the marriage won’t fall apart

26. What countries have you visited so far? bosnia and herzegovina, egypt, tunisia, turkey, romania, greece, i think it was either hungary or macedonia that one time, aaand i think that’s it unless i unknowingly visited ireland when i was like 1

What is the scariest nightmare you have ever had? i dont know tbh i think like i’ve had a lot and some were very recent as well so i can’t accurately answer this but i think the most recent one with like a boatload of bugs and shit (don’t ask how, i still have nightmares about those two nights dear god)
