I decided that the Wicked Witch of the West needed more than just a model sheet to fit with the other witches here. So I did make a standalone artwork of her and did some fine-tuning of the design to be more animation friendly.
The frill around the Wicked Witch of the West is shrunken down or omitted altogether. The dress is slightly smaller to showcase her yellow shoes. The umbrella design is changed (I'm debating on the design of that thing). Many skin lines are simplified. Oh, I decided to finalize my approach to the eyes.
The black gaping eye socket was a sore for sight. It had to be an eyepatch or it just looks jarring, but the lines would get in the way of the disfigured look I wanted for the witch. Then I remember my conversations with @danguy96 about his Wicked fanfiction ideas. He mentioned an idea he that the magic eye is actually hidden behind the eyepatch rather than being the other eye. But the witch is supposed to have only one good eye, not one regular eye and one magical eye. And it's then I thought, why not make the regular eye milky and faded in color while having the eye socket glow yellow with hate. It's a nice misdirection and twist to the book description. The supposed regular eye is actually blind while her good eye the scary eye socket that pierces your soul.

If I have to come up with a backstory, it's that the Wicked Witch of the West is the oldest and the most skilled of the wicked witches. But her abuse of magic for evil caused her body to shrivel like mummy, drained of all youth. Her normal eyes eventually become blind as a sign of her physical age and then one day, she suffered a terrible injury when some water splashed on her face. It wasn't enough to melt her, but it dissolved her left eye and melted her skin to her skull.
The witch remedied her injury and enchanted her eye socket to become her magical all-seeing eye, which gave her great power. But her experience with the water caused the witch to become paranoid. She stopped using her broomstick to fly around her conquered territories and spent most of her days hold up in her castle with an umbrella in her hand. The witch was still powerful in magic and feared by all, but she was at risk of being overshadowed by the Wicked Witch of the East, who seized her sister-in-arms' absence as a means to expand her influence. This is why the Wicked Witch of the West wants those silver shoes.
In fact, she's been shopping around for magical artifacts and magical minions to prepare herself for the siege against the Wizard of Oz at the Emerald City. She has heard rumors, mostly from Mombi, that the Wizard is actually weak and a fraud, but she's too paranoid to risk that chance.
Then, as fate would have it, Dorothy Gale and friends come to her doorstep, wearing the silver shoes she coveted, to kill her. This was an opportunity she was willing to take.
I feel bad for using Winkie county as it is in the books because Wicked said the name was a slur but the other one is way too realistic and before you say “that’s the point” I DONT CARE ITS OZ WINKIE SOUNDS MAGICAL LET ME HABE MY FUCKIBG WHIMSY
So I was re-watching The Wizard of Oz for the first time since I was a kid, and in light of Wicked, I'm now wondering how we're supposed to explain these guys:
They are apparently Winkie Guards. But isn't Fiyero from Winkie Country? Why is Fiyero not green? Did everyone's parents in Winkie Country besides the royal family go kinda crazy over the same green elixir that Elphaba's mother drank, back in the day, and Fiyero is not fazed by Elphaba because half his subjects look like this? Or, like, are Winkies not usually green, but the Wicked Witch makes her guards paint their faces green in solidarity? And does Gregory Maguire attempt to explain ANY of this in the book (which I tried and failed to read years ago)?! Questions abound.
The Munchkins gave a whole musical number when the Wicked Witch of the East died. I demand the Winkies also give Dorothy a musical number as well for killing the Wicked Witch of the West.
