June 24th, 2023 is the five-year anniversary of the Crayons NSB Challenge!
Yes, you heard me right. Five years ago, I posted the opening to my absolute most beloved sims legacy. Five years later, I still can’t stop loving this crazy family, and you guys have been so kind to follow along with them.
In honor of this cool anniversary, I thought I’d throw a little celebration! From now until June 24th, you can vote in a fan poll! Vote for your favorite heir, spouse, spare, couple, and overall character. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to submit questions for the Crayons - both past and present! They’ll answer any questions they get.
You can also ask me a question about the Crayons, too! I will also be posting behind-the-scenes thoughts and reflections on each generation starting June 24th, as well as the results of the fan poll!
Thank you guys so much for supporting the Crayons. Here’s to five more fun years!
Another thing that kept this legacy going for me was its intention. What makes the Crayons different from every other legacy that has lived (and died) on this blog is that the Crayons are, at their core, unplanned, casual, and entirely for fun. Sometimes there’s a story, but that story tends to come about naturally based on what happens in the game.
Suuuure I plan from time to time. But... there’s no posing unless I want to do it in the moment. There’s no pressure.
Rocky’s story, for that reason, isn’t too dramatic (save the time they died for a bit), but I think it works for them. Wait... have I ever told the real story of the time they died for a bit? Because that’s a doozy. Okay, under the cut, the behind-the-scenes for gen 1′s one and only **Drama**
Okay, so, Rocky’s death. Important context is that the Crayons were my Seasons tester family, so I didn’t know how a lot of that expansion’s features worked when I first encountered them here. Thus, I didn’t *get* the gnomes, and so when a glitch caused them to stick around continuously showering the family with seasonal seeds for days I just kind of let them be there for a while, not knowing that they weren’t supposed to do that.
Eventually, though, I realized they were glitched and thought it might be fun to experiment with them. So, I took Rocky’s trusty Rockyray 3000 and had them transform one of the gnomes. However, when I did this, the WHOLE GAME FROZE. I hadn’t saved in a bit so I went “Oopsies!” and quit to the world map. When I came back, the gnome was gone, replaced by the vase from the post, and I thought, well, it worked I guess!
The next day, Rocky went to work. They were experimenting on the chemistry stand when it exploded. Now, usually, when this happens, your sim gets set on fire and you get a little chance to direct them to the shower to save themselves. Except... that didn’t happen. The game immediately froze and then when it unfroze Rocky just dropped dead.
Now, obviously, this is not what I wanted to happen. I panicked and quit the game. When I reopened it, it was back to the last time I saved, before Rocky transformed the gnome. Weirdly, though, Rocky had THEIR OWN GRAVE IN THEIR INVENTORY. YES. REALLY.
How did this happen? Did the two glitches have anything to do with each other? I have no idea. But the weirdness of the whole situation inspired me to blame Rocky’s alternate timeline death on the gnomes, and they became temporary eldritch bad guys for the family.
