☄: what the writing process was like
Shoulder pain and finger cramps, unusual energy for and interest in work (I once spoke to a former heroin user who had the same side effect during the phase of his drug habit, funnily enough) but total lack of interest in personal affairs, talking about the story every day with @drivingsideways (who was writing her own wonderful epic at the time), reading poetry to gain speed / momentum because I wanted to finish it fast, losing hours listening to Rosalía when I should have been writing!
Once I started posting the crash came about halfway though, and then it was a real chore to do rewrites and edits. But I think it went through because the weeks of furious writing beforehand had already built the muscle of the story, so I didn’t need the floodlights on every night, so to speak.
♡: my favorite part
Strangely I think it’s the early scenes of them in her flat, just––dating? It’s so monstrous that he’s doing this while keeping the secret from her. But I think behind the mirror is just her happiness and success, you know, and her getting to the point where she can read Skidelsky while lying on a swing, with him drinking whiskey next to her. (Does she ever get to have that again? I'm not sure.) I think it’s because there’s dread running through that idyll and that feels natural to me, somehow: that was the prevailing key of the story. I have no psychological justification for this at all.
