On a field trip to Berlin in 1985 we happened to visit the IBA development around Rauchstrasse. Filled with the works of Rossi, Grassi, Hollein, to name but a few. By chance we gained access to many, occupying their public staircases and lobbies but without a hint of the spaces the residents occupied. They have remained a mystery other than extrapolating the plans from their extensive publication. It’s a strange area, Smoke Street would be its literal English translation, but there were no chimney’s. It’s aura still proliferates my mind since these architects have gone on to bigger and better things, but the significance of establishing a residential component in an architect’s oeuvre makes even the strangest things seem real.
