A honest-to-goodness, Sperry-built, airway beacon! 😱 HOLY SHOOT!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Can you BELIEVE that pilots used this as a part of a nationwide airway system in the States to deliver mail? Yes, planes were used briefly to deliver mail (before returning to trains, which were much more economical), and the airways the pilots followed were VISUAL. A pilot would fly at night, following the lit-up airway from beacon to beacon. The beacons were bright, and could be seen from quite a distance at this time! The beacons were identified using a short Morse code identified, not unlike our NDBs of today. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ How ballsy these pilots must have been to take on a task like this. It’s important to get things done during your days off, but it’s also equally as important to keep yourself some time to reset before getting back into the saddle. Especially with flying! There’s lots of stresses and responsibilities on our shoulders: high cabin alts, fatigue, figuring out the weather, flying approaches, etc etc. ⁣ ⁣ So, what do YOU like to do to prepare for another long day of work the next day? I like listening to relaxing music and studying something, whether that’s flying related or just something else I’m learning about. Avaya is a very bright little girl (6 years old) and was very keen to learn to do the loops and rolls herself. She had this absolutely serious look on her face whenever I explained anything and just burst into smiles and giggles any time we did a maneuver. This is her roll at the end.
