Student to Co-lead Girlstart Summer Camp in Valley and North Texas
UTRGV biology major and UTeach student Gabriela Rodriguez this summer will conduct Girlstart Summer Camps, teaching elementary students about growing plants in space and how to code a robot. The Laredo native was selected for an internship as a co-leader with Girlstart, an organization that focuses on engaging young girls in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. 25 days of giving: Girlstart
Today’s Charity: Girlstart As always, feel free to contribute as well, but if you don’t, that’s fine!
What they do: Girlstart is an organization that empowers young girls in STEM. As everyone and their mother knows, there’s a huge drop-off between young girls getting interested in the STEM fields and the actual number of women who pursue careers in STEM - Girlstart provides educational STEM programs for K-12 girls to foster a lifelong love of STEM.
Why I care: I actually volunteered at a Girlstart open house, and it was amazing to see all these girls who were absolutely fascinated with the booths we had set up - honestly, some of them were smarter than I was, and I hope that’s something that Girlstart helps to become increasingly common among young women.
Though this is a Texas-based organization, there are several other similar programs out there to support.

#DeSTEMber
We’re over a week into December, so for those of you with kids that means several things. Smuggling packages in from the car when no one’s looking. Tea towels suddenly becoming vital items of costume. And soon, two weeks of no school. With the wintery weather likely to rule out playing out, keeping the kids happy indoors can become challenge number one.
Well, an American company called Girlstart may have a solution for you. Their mission is “to increase girls’ interest and engagement in STEM through innovative, nationally-recognized informal STEM education programs” and for this, they’ve come up with #DeSTEMber - a daily STEM based activity to fuel your little one’s mind(s), and show them how much fun they can have with science, technology and maths.
The activities have already covered a wide range, from the physics of ziplining marbles, to the biology of birds wings (with bonus physics in the shape of paper aeroplanes). Best of all, their activity about unit conversion (a skill we literally all need and no one has) involves baking cookies!
If one a day seems a bit much, why not cherry-pick the ones that you and your little labcoats think sound best? And after that, maybe try out some non-cookie ones too. Just as stories are a fun and easy way to get everyone into English, we think this is exactly the sort of scheme we need to see more of - demonstrating to girls the real-world, practical, *awesome* uses of STEM. We’d love to see more of this catch on and take off in the UK too!
For those who read my previous blog post, you may remember that about two months ago I completed the first phase of my two part side-project that I call PolarPort: An Internet of Things (IoT) device (a.k.a. the PolarPort) and mobile app that helps children believe in the spirit of Christmas, while giving parents a more modern way to incentivize good behavior from their children. An illustrated children's e-book that introduces the Polar Elf Innovation Squad, a group of young Polar Elves that use teamwork, technology and tenacity to design the PolarPort to help save Christmas. With the first
PolarPort will donate up to $2 for every copy of “The Adventures of the Polar Elf Innovation Squad : The Polar Crystal Christmas Crisis” sold on either Apple iBookstore / Amazon Kindle Store between September 1st - December 25th, 2015 to Girlstart. An organization that helps inspire girls to pursue STEM based interests at an early age.
