Ghost In The Shell (2017)

 So I saw this yesterday. I thought it was actually really cool and I don’t agree with the people who aren’t giving it a chance. I personally do not like Scarlett Johansson as an actress, I think she's bland and is in too many movies as essentially the exact same character. I don't necessarily think that The Major needed to be played by an asian woman though since I never really figured that she was asian anyway. She was a robot in a body that did not represent her own, so why would her shell need to look asian? I wish they made her hair purple though, just because it looked cool and they chose blue streaks instead, not sure why.

 Besides the casting, which seems to be all that anyone cares about, I thought the actual props, special effects, and settings were awesome. The props, like the cars and guns that were based on the same ones from the anime movie and shows looked so cool. Aramaki was a badass and probably did cooler things in this movie than he ever did in the show. I wish we could have seen more of Togusa since he was always interesting in the show. Batou was really accurate as far as the acting goes too, I feel like the actor who played him really understood the character and presented him well, not sure why they changed the way his eyes look though. The eye reveal was also cool, at first I thought they just weren't going to do the enhanced eyes and then as soon as the major turned to him in that scene I appreciated the fakeout.

 Every iteration of “Ghost In The Shell” is it’s own thing, and this movie is no different. The Major in the show had her differences from the one in the original movie and the live action Major had her differences as well, and this is just how it is. I loved the direct adaptations, like the water fight, the tank fight (Which might have actually been better), and the scene on the boat. The spider tank fight ending probably would have been better in this movie if she was paralyzed and had Batou save her like in the original movie, but I’m mostly mad that we didn't get to see that badass gun that Batou used in the movie during that scene.

 I do not think the movie was perfect, I do not think the casting was perfect, but I do think that the movie was well made and the story was good. I enjoyed it and if you only judge this movie by its lead actress, then you're missing out on a really interesting movie.

So I just got done with the new Ghost in the Shell. As an action movie it was pretty good. As a Ghost in the Shell movie it fell short in a few places. So the plot is basically a modified Puppetmaster with some notes taken from the newest Arise movie. As that goes it was pretty well done on adapting from both of those. The visuals were absolutely stunning. The only thing that could have made it better was extending the classic scene of the Major ripping open the hatch on the tank and destroying her own body in the process. And the cast was very well picked. Except for Scarlett Johansson. She wasn't bad, and this might be bias talking, but she wasn't good either. When I think of the Major, my mind immediately goes to Stand Alone Complex. The Major's personality in that is...well the only way I can come close to describing it is mature. She's not motherly or like a big sister but the traits she does possess make her seem...capable of whatever she puts her mind towards. The Major in the film is sullen, at times almost childlike, and when she speaks she seems uncertain most of the time. Plus the moment when she's discovering her past and finds a specific person from it, that person says the Major reminds her of someone because of the way she looks at her, but...it wasn't a good look? If someone looked at me like that all the time I'd be a little concerned for them. Then there's her body language. Through most of the film she's got her shoulders slightly hunched forward and her head pointed a little down. In the manga and anime, as she has a cybernetic body, she has perfect posture, and in Arise they never once animated her blinking. So the way she was portrayed in the film, being at odds with the Major I have grown accustomed to, has sadly given me a case of "not muh Major," I will admit. Lastly, on the other cast. Like I said, they were well picked. Batou had no faults, but I wish they would have let him use some heavy weaponry. Aramaki was great and I'm glad he got to have a little more action but some of his best scenes have been his political standoffs which did not happen this time. Togusa looked the part of Average Joe, but never once brought up his family or got a call from his wife. The rest of the team were on screen (for the most part) and the movie is slightly short so it's understandable not much screen time was devoted to them and their interactions as a team. Oh, and the Puppetmaster deviated from the traditional portrayal, but I really enjoyed his character. So all this said, it's still a good movie. I do not feel at all that I wasted my $10 on a ticket. You should definitely go see it, in my opinion.
