Superhero Without a Cape: Hazera Begum
A few days ago, I had the opportunity to visit Hazera Begum and her kids. If I’m being honest, I’d have to say that that visit changed something in me. Quite often, living with privilege causes us to forget what that privilege looks like. We filter out the positives and dwell on the negatives – emphasizing on how unfair life has been to us. But when we put things in perspective, when we honestly compare our lives to those of the unfortunate, the contrast humbles us. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what part of this visit has caused this tug at my heartstrings. Was it that the way these 42 kids happily coexisted in a 3 bedroom apartment without any complaints? Or was it the way they never complained about their lack of material things and found happiness in the smallest of occurrences? It could also be the fact that most of these children don’t know where they come from, who their parents were, or what happened to them, and accepted life as it is – finding a family within the dwellers of these 3 rooms, loving and taking care of each other. I’m not sure. What I do know, however, is that their compassion, love, and ability to find happiness in the smallest things have touched my heart.
