Sometimes when life is shit...you got to make others happy...
This is how I deal with my first world problems. I’ll anonymously donate money to people here, buy items off people’s wish lists, or buy coworkers stuff I know they want/need. I’ve been stressed about stuff at work, just kid stuff, annoying coworkers, and useless admin.
So one of my coworkers, the eldest statesman at 30 or so years of service, put a call out for where he could buy a certain type of bread mix on Facebook. He’s a former Navy guy, pretty conservative, but a great teacher with a dry sense of humor. (Never forgot when I was in the room and a kid asked him what color the planet Uranus was and he quipped, brown)
So I didn’t see this message until like 1:30 am during my insomnia time. I quickly searched my local grocery store’s site and said they had it here did he want me to pick some up before coming to school. Waited, waited, no response before I had to leave so I still swung by the store (open 24 hours) and bought two boxes just to help out.
I brought them into his room. He asked how much he owed me, I said nothing, just being nice. Told him where to get them in the future, and he knew where it was. He was so delighted by $4.50 worth of bread mix he gave me a fucking hug. I was so shocked I almost cried.
This is how we uplift each other. Give when you can, without expectation.
