Ok, I have a request. I just finished Given last week and I've been reading and reading and reading everything that there is with my beautiful children Mafuyama in it. And I don't know why i cannot find anything where Mafuyu writes their next song about Ritzuka but doesn't tell him it's about him, only when he sings it for the first time they all realize it. I hope you find this somehow, motivating :-D. THANKS SO MUCH!
hey anon I’ve been thinking about this ever since you sent it in and I hope I did your request justice lol! Kinda went my own way with it!

It was no secret anymore that Mafuyu Sato was a musical genius. He worked and worked to get better everyday, reaching his bandmates’ level in only a few months.
He spent all of his days writing songs. He loved it, he really did, and he needed it. So, so much. Because Mafuyu couldn’t talk about his feelings easily, so writing them and opening up with them in front of a crowd full of strangers was actually easier.
It’s July 31st and Given have their biggest concert ever since they debuted. Mafuyu wrote three new songs for this concert, two of them with Ritsuka’s help. He did insist however to write the third one alone. He also wanted it to be the last one they would play, right as the clock struck twelve and it was officially August. A song about love. A song about growth, about moving forward with a special person. A song where Mafuyu could pour out a sea of emotions he had for his boyfriend.
Said boyfriend had no idea what the song was about. It’s just another song Mafuyu had to write, Ritsuka must have thought. That’s what Mafuyu convinced himself all night, that’s what he let a few tears fall for before he fell asleep hugging Kedama, that’s what he mumbled to himself before knocking on Ritsuka’s door at 7 in the evening, on August 1st.
It’s August 1st and Ritsuka is turning 18. He promised his friends they would go out, but the concert last night had him crawling in his apartment, searching for light switches as he stumbled to the kitchen. He was happy, with the slightest hint of a smile decorating his tired face as he poured himself a glass of milk. Happy about the comments on the livestream of last night’s concert, happy for the band, happy for Mafuyu.
Ritsuka always found Mafuyu the most beautiful when he would sing. Eyes closed, or glancing at him, a few strawberry blond strands of hair sticking to his forehead, and a voice as serene and magical as a siren’s. Mafuyu had to be one of the few people in the world gifted with the gift that was a voice as good as his.
He unlocked his phone, going straight to Twitter, where their performance was posted. So many comments about the last song, was it really that good? he thought.
A new notification lit up the screen, it was from Itaya from school.
Happy birthday man! The last song was great, didn’t know you and Sato were so serious about eachother! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Ritsuka got a frightening dejavu from his first performance with Mafuyu, when he kissed him and forgot about it for a whole night. What was that message supposed to mean exactly? Did that song really have anything to do with their relationship?
Opening the app again, he listened to the lyrics closely. There was a close up of Mafuyu during the chorus. He was looking to his left, where the guitarist was, a content smile on his face.
Oh. Those lyrics. They’re so beautiful. How couldn’t I pay attention to them? How could I ever consider this was just another song when it’s the most beautiful words I’ve ever heard in my life? And they’re about me, for me, for us! For Mafuyu and me.
Biting his nails, Ritsuka walked around the island counter. He had read those lyrics so many times, trying to build the music around them. How could he be so naive?
It’s 7 in the evening. August 1st. Ritsuka has replied to every birthday message, listening to Mafuyu’s song on repeat. No, not Mafuyu’s. His song. Their song. That’s what he realized with a smile. It wasn’t just a song, it was everything Mafuyu had ever felt for Ritsuka, raw and beautiful.
A knock on the door scared him. He wasn’t really expecting any guests, he was ready to go to the station to meet up with the band. Was it Yayoi who forgot her keys again?
“Happy birthday.” Mafuyu mumbled, as brown eyes met blue ones. Ritsuka pulled him in by the sleeve of his shirt, wrapping his arms around his waist tight, face buried in the crook between his neck and shoulder. God, his scent was addictive. Ritsuka could smell the strawberry-scented body wash and flowery laundry detergent all day long. Mafuyu hesitantly wrapped his own arms around his boyfriend’s waist, patting his back lightly.
“I’m so stupid.” Ritsuka whispered and Mafuyu barely heard him. “So stupid.”
“Yeah.” Mafuyu replied with a chuckle.
“I can’t write songs like you can, but I hope it’s getting through to you.”
“What exactly?”
“I want to spend the rest of my life with you too, Mafuyu.”
