Black people live in a world where we’ve learned to need to be armed with cellular devices at all times just to document each experience and interaction (in a mostly vain attempt) with police or any other claiming superiority over our humanity, our right to breathe.
We have to prove our innocence and/or intent when calling for “help.” We’re always presumed to be the guilty ones, thereby expendable.
We have to be our own documentarians, proving why our lives even matter even in the most innocuous, most mundane settings.
We have present some ounce of credibility to even receive quality medical care.
We have to show we’re extraordinarily smart. Extremely articulate. Educated. Without fault. Downplay our emotions or be deemed irrational. Exaggerate our compliance to “authority.”
We shape-shift and conform to molds even the makers can’t pour themselves into. And, still that’s enough to prove our humanity worthy enough to receive basic care or protection or to even exist.
We are tired.
