Seyhan Musaoglu GrandLife – the coolest cat 2011 Installation C-prints, video, audio

Seyhan Musaoglu’s recent installation, GrandLife – the coolest cat, highlights the trend of digital and physical, copying and pasting. By scouring blogs, Google Image searches and Facebook albums (public and private), she creates dense, saturated images of nightclubs and DJ culture. The prints undergo a rigorous system of saving, re-saving, Photoshop manipulation, and professional printing methods to illustrate a journey of image degradation, enhancement and screenshot physicality. The results are digital images at 72dpi, ready for re-distribution onto the web or printed as large-format digital prints, bringing the .png to physical existence.

Giselle Zatonyl Exorcise Willow 2011 Video 720 x 480 px (looped) Willow Smith, meet Linda Blair, meet Giselle Zatonyl, a video and multimedia artist with an innate skill for remixing the past with the present. Exorcise Willow mashes original footage from William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” with the 2010 breakout hit “Whip My Hair” by Willow Smith. The synchronization, uncanny, the result, undeniably hip. The age of viral videos, YouTube re-mixing, and Internet memes is prime source material for her conceptual remaking of classics.

Jordan Tate New Work #30 2010 Animated GIF

Jordan Tate is a digital photographer, celebrating and highlighting the behind-the-scenes modes of image-making and sharing. He highlights the means of making and re-making images by exposing and deconstructing the mechanisms, color combinations, and sources present in the image itself. Tate has developed several collaborative projects, including the Lossless project, with Adam Tindale, an electronic drummer and digital instrument designer. Lossless challenges the representational nature of photography by re-sorting and ordering digital photographs using custom software and image algorithms. The images, once readable and coherent, appear now as ordered pixels, each with their own representation of specific values of color, brightness, saturation, and more. The original images, still intact, are not removed from their original context, but now function as unique objects comprised of a data presentation of every single original pixel. Faces degrade according to Hue, snapshots split into lines based on Saturation, and animated .gifs hover above what may or may not be natural landscapes. The physical is digital, and the image, original.

Jason Huff The Story of Art 2010 E.H. Gombrich, The Story of Art 16th Edition, 1995 9.8” x 7.1” Book

The Story of Art takes E.H. Gombrich’s seminal art history text, which relies heavily on the presentation of images, and reduces the pages of art history to nothing more than broken image link icons. The cover image and every single graphic on the interior has been replaced with the icon. The graphic, synonymous with outdated websites, challenges the so-called canon of art history.
