Mountain Moment: Glacial Flour

Mount Rainier’s glacier-fed rivers are not crystal-clear, but often have a milky color. This is due to suspended rock dust, called glacial flour, in the water. Glacial flour is created by the movement of glacial ice grinding against the bedrock of the mountain.

Peyto Lake, Banff National Park This spectacular photo is of Peyto Lake in Banff National Park, Canada, located in a valley of the Waputik Range. This glacier-fed lake gleams of a bright turquoise due to rock flour, silt-sized particles from glacial erosion that flow into the lake during summer. These particles remain suspended in the water giving the lake the characteristic color, due to the blue-wavelength absorbing properties of the rock flour combined with the longer wavelength absorbing properties of the lake. The particles reflect a color with greater green character, resulting in the turquoise shade. Who wouldn’t want to see a personal tent or a kayak reflected in this picture, as well? The Earth is Most Definitely Not Flat and Boring! This is along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park. With this image, I chose to take advantage of some high ground I was located on and angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to create more of a sweeping view across this glacial valley and national park landscape. I noticed that most distinctly, with the almost elongated look of Peyto Lake.
