Swiss Glacier Collapse Buries Alpine Village
Switzerland Glacier Collapse Buries Alpine Village | Blatten Devastated by Landslide
A catastrophic glacier collapse in the Swiss Alps has buried nearly 90% of the village of Blatten under millions of cubic meters of ice, rock, and debris. The Birch Glacier in Switzerland’s Lötschental Valley broke away on 28 May, triggering a massive landslide and rockfall that swept through the region. Drone footage reveals the devastation: Homes gone, rivers buried, and one person still missing. Officials had evacuated the village weeks in advance, likely saving dozens of lives. This rare event has sparked urgent questions about the stability of alpine glaciers, with experts calling it one of the most extreme collapses in recorded history. Natural Hazards Chief Raphael Mayoraz described the event as a “worst-case scenario.” The disaster serves as a stark warning amid increasing concerns about the impact of climate change in mountainous regions. 🇨🇭 BLATTEN AFTER GLACIER COLLAPSE: AERIAL FOOTAGE REVEALS EXTENT OF DAMAGE
🚨 The commune of Blatten, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, remains in a disaster zone following the massive Birch Glacier collapse that occurred on May 27–28, 2025.
📹 New aerial footage captures the scale of destruction — huge volumes of ice, snow, and rock have swept across the area near the village. Some protective dams were breached, and structural damage to buildings is likely.
‼️ The volume of the collapse exceeded 3.5 million m³, exerting an estimated 9 million tons of pressure. Around 300 residents were evacuated ahead of time. Return to the village is still not permitted.
⚠️ Experts warn of a high risk of further collapses, as the glacier continues moving at a speed of up to 10 meters per day. The threat of partial burial of Blatten remains real.
🌍 The incident underscores the growing risks associated with climate change and glacial melt. Urgent scientific cooperation and international attention are essential to understanding and addressing these escalating natural threats.
