Since you're in college for graphic design, I was wondering if you have tips or recommendations or smth for an anxious college-hunting senior who's considering doing graphic design? I'm guess I'm just not sure what I should expect from classes and look for in a school :U
Yeah absolutely! Tbh i feel like I should explain how i got into graphic design first because I’m in my 6th year of college at this point and i kinda stumbled into this major after a weird semester of suffering.
Initially, i went to junior college to get my basics, and I was sure i was gonna be a teacher. Once i got to a four year university i realized that wasn’t what I wanted at all. I kinda knew I wanted to do art, but my school doesn’t offer animation or anything, so my 2 choices were graphic design or painting/drawing.
I had this notion that graphic design was just advertising trying to disguise itself as an art major (and yeah, a lot of it is ad related) , but the longer I do it the more I enjoy it! There’s a really broad range of what you can do as a graphic designer. Think everything from laying out text in books to designing movie posters to movie credits if you can find a place that teaches motion graphics.
So… advise for picking colleges in general:
1) look for junior colleges if you can, especially if your not totally sure what you want to do. It’s cheaper and gives you the chance to explore your interests, plus you can get your basic courses done in a smaller setting.
2) Look for an art department where the teachers want to see you succeed. That was a HUGE factor in my changing majors. The people in the education department made me feel like they wanted to get me through the program as quickly as possible. whereas I went to the art department, and within minutes felt at home. You won’t find this everywhere, but it helps that artist are usually way more passionate that regular teachers and I think that makes them better teachers in general.
3) Critiques are meant to help you improve. You’ll certainly learn the proper critique etiquette in your freshman year, but that doesn’t mean critiques are always gonna be pleasant. Sometimes you’ll make something you’re really proud of and it gets demolished in critique. If your school does rough crit before the final, write down all the feedback you get. Your teachers will notice and they’ll appreciate it.
4) Art supplies aren’t cheap, and you’re probably gonna need a fancy new computer. I don’t know about other places, but our school requires every student to have a Macbook. It’s expensive, but it’s worth it to invest in a computer that can process several programs at once. You probably won’t need one your first year though, so make sure you figure out what your college requires and then make that investment.
5) BACK YOUR SHIT UP EVERY DAY. I’m gonna sound like my professor, but I heard it 3 times in one day. Someone every semester is gonna have something happen to their computer. Someone’s computer is gonna crash. Someone’s computer is gonna fall out of their backpack and break in half. Someone’s gonna get their computer stolen by a crack addict (and all three of these have actually happened to people I’ve had class with). Assume it will be you. Get an external hard drive and backup your work every day so if something ever happens, you’ve only lost a day’s worth of work and not everything you’ve ever made.
6) … and this is obvious, but really important. Be a nice person. Stay humble. I have class with people who are fantastic designers, but no one would work with them given the choice because they have terrible attitudes. Your teachers and classmates are going to appreciate you so much more if you have a good attitude. And if someone’s an asshole, just remember that they’re gonna have to find a job one day.
This is probably way longer than you expected and I know I’m gonna think of more stuff on my drive to school in a couple minutes, but I hope this helped a bit! If you have any other questions I’ll definitely try to answer them, cuz like I said, I’ve been doing the college thing for 6 years now an I like to be able to pass on some wisdom now and then. Good Luck!!!
